Fuvahmulah (Gnaviyani) atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You have heard about the tiger sharks of Fuvahmulah and want to know how a trip from KLIA actually works.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Gnaviyani is a single island, Fuvahmulah, in the far south. You fly from Male on Maldivian in about 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes, and stay in a guesthouse, because the island has no resort. It suits certified divers who want tiger sharks, surfers and travellers who like a real local island; it does not suit a classic water villa honeymoon.

Where is Fuvahmulah, and what is it like?

Gnaviyani is the only Maldivian atoll made of a single island, Fuvahmulah. It sits alone in open ocean between Huvadhu and Addu, close to the equator, and is about 5 km long according to Visit Maldives.

It feels different from the rest of the country. Instead of a lagoon and sandbanks, you find forest, farmland, freshwater lakes and wetlands, and beaches that face deep water. Our atolls and regions hub compares it with other regions.

There is no resort on the island. Everyone stays in a guesthouse or small hotel, follows local island rules and eats Maldivian food, which is halal by default.

Why do people go? Tiger sharks and big ocean life

Most visitors come to dive. The government tourism site describes Tiger Zoo, at the harbour entrance, as one of the few places where divers can reliably see tiger sharks in the wild.

Dive centres take divers to about 5 to 10 m at the harbour, where tiger sharks are seen year round. Visit Maldives says seven rare shark species occur around the island, including thresher sharks. Travel guides add hammerheads, often around April to May and October to December, and a chance of whale sharks early in the year.

This is open ocean diving with surge and current. It suits certified divers more than first-timers. Read our Maldives diving guide before choosing a dive level.

What else is there to do?

Fuvahmulah rewards slow days on land, which is rare in the Maldives. Visit Maldives lists these highlights:

ExperienceWhat to expect
Thoondu beachSmooth, shiny pebbles and the country's only natural beach break for surf
Bissaaveli beachWhite-gold sand with natural pools
Fuvahmulah Nature ParkLakes and wetlands, canoe and pedal boat rides, boardwalk
KodakilhiA lake known for a mud bath
Heritage walkHaviththa, an old Buddhist stupa, and the coral stone well Vasho Vevu
FoodKattelhi garudhiya (snake mackerel soup), local sweets

Surfing is best in the southwest monsoon, about June to August, according to Visit Maldives. Thoondu has currents, so ask locally before swimming.

How do you get there from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a Maldivian domestic flight to Fuvahmulah (FVM). Flight data and the island's dive centres put the flight at about 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes, up to 2 hours with a stop.

A dive centre listed departures from Male at 15:10 and 23:35 in March 2025, and allows 3 to 4 hours between landing and the domestic flight. There is no ferry from Male. Full timings, baggage rules and the Addu ferry option are on our getting to Fuvahmulah page.

The practical upshot for Malaysians: the AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals usually connect the same day. Batik Air lands late, so check whether a late flight runs that day or plan a night in Hulhumale.

Where to stay

Guesthouses are spread around the island, many run with or beside dive centres. One guide counts about 25, including small places of 3 to 11 rooms, and shark-themed lodges aimed at divers.

Rooms are simple and air-conditioned. Many places include airport pickup, bicycles and full board. Our local island versus resort page for Fuvahmulah explains how this compares with a resort trip in nearby Addu.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Getting around: motorbikes and bicycles. Taxis are booked by phone, according to Visit Maldives.
  • Money: travel guides report ATMs dispensing rufiyaa, and US dollars accepted at most guesthouses. Carry some cash.
  • Health: the island has a hospital, according to travel guides. Serious cases go to Male, so carry insurance with evacuation and diving cover.
  • Taxes: guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 17% Tourism GST.
  • Dress: cover shoulders and knees in villages. No alcohol is sold on the island.
  • Costs: add flight, dive and guesthouse quotes to the trip cost calculator.

How long to stay

Four nights is the minimum, and five or six is better for divers. Ocean conditions cancel some dive days, and you need a no-fly gap before the domestic flight home.

A sample shape: day 1 fly KLIA to Male and on to Fuvahmulah; days 2 to 4 dive mornings and explore the lakes and beaches in the afternoons; day 5 a land day; day 6 fly to Male and home.

Who Fuvahmulah suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Fuvahmulah suits certified divers chasing sharks, surfers, and curious travellers who prefer a working island to a resort. Muslim travellers and families who are comfortable in a guesthouse will find it easy to settle in.

Choose elsewhere for a water villa honeymoon, for young children who need a calm lagoon, or for non-divers on a short trip. Addu next door has resorts and is linked by ferry, and Kaafu is far quicker for a first Maldives trip.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need to be a certified diver to see the tiger sharks?
Tiger Harbour dives sit at about 5 to 10 m, but the water is open ocean with surge and current. Dive centres generally ask for certification and recent experience, and some set a minimum number of logged dives. Beginners can take a course on the island first, then join reef dives. Ask the centre for its rules in writing before you book flights.
Is there a bikini beach on Fuvahmulah?
Travel guides mention a designated tourist beach, but we could not confirm it from an official source. Thoondu, the best-known beach, is a public beach with pebbles and currents. Plan on modest swimwear in public, and ask your guesthouse which spot, if any, is set aside for tourists this season.
Can I visit Fuvahmulah as a day trip from Addu?
It is possible but tight. Public ferries between Addu and Fuvahmulah take about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and do not run on Fridays. A day trip leaves little time for a shark dive, so most divers stay at least three nights on the island.
Is Fuvahmulah good for Muslim travellers?
Yes. It is a Maldivian community where food is halal by default, mosques are part of daily life and alcohol is not sold. Dress modestly in villages. During Ramadan, cafes may close in daytime, so ask your guesthouse about meal arrangements.
