Getting to Haa Dhaalu from Male airport: options and limitations

Haa Dhaalu is one of the easier far-northern atolls to reach, because it has two airports with direct domestic flights from Male. The challenge is timing, not access.

Which routes go to Haa Dhaalu?

There are three realistic routes from Velana International Airport in Male.

Soneva also lists a speedboat directly from Male at about five hours and does not recommend it. That gives a sense of the distance.

How long is the Hanimaadhoo flight?

Flight listings put Male to Hanimaadhoo at about an hour, with a range of 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes depending on aircraft and routing. Maldivian operates the route with ATR turboprops, according to FlightStats.

Hanimaadhoo was redeveloped with a longer runway of about 2,465 metres and reopened on 9 November 2025. Larger aircraft may change the schedule over time, so check your actual flight time when your property confirms the booking.

If you stay on Hanimaadhoo, there is no boat at all. The Barefoot Eco Hotel, for example, is listed as a short road transfer from the terminal.

How does it fit a flight from KLIA?

Maldives time is three hours behind Malaysia. Use your landing time to choose the plan.

• AirAsia lands about 09:50. You can usually catch a late-morning or early-afternoon domestic flight and be on your island by mid-afternoon.
• Malaysia Airlines lands about 11:25. Same-day connections normally work. For Soneva's seaplane, Soneva asks guests to reach Male by 15:00.
• Batik Air lands about 21:55. Seaplanes are finished for the day. Some late domestic flights to the north appear in schedules, but they vary by season, so most travellers plan a night in Hulhumale and fly the next morning.

For the return, morning departures from Hanimaadhoo reach Male early, which suits daytime flights home.

What are the limitations?

Fewer flights than the south. Northern routes have fewer departures per day than busy southern routes. If your KLIA flight is late, you may wait several hours for the next one.

Booking deadlines. Soneva asks for transfers to be booked at least 72 hours before arrival. Guesthouses often want flight details a week ahead so they can hold seats.

Luggage. Seaplane guests on Trans Maldivian have 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage. Domestic airline allowances vary by fare, so ask before you pack. Surfboards and large dive gear may need extra arrangements.

Weather. Seaplanes can be delayed or rerouted by weather. The domestic flight is the more reliable fallback.

What does it cost?

As a planning range, domestic flight plus speedboat transfers to distant atolls cost about USD 350 to 520 per adult return (immaldives transfer guide, checked 11 October 2026). At RM4.09 per USD, that is about RM1,430 to RM2,130 per adult return.

If you stay on Hanimaadhoo itself, you pay for the flight but not a boat, so your cost may fall below that range. Ask your guesthouse for its quoted transfer price and what it includes.

Which route should you choose?

Staying on Hanimaadhoo: fly straight to Hanimaadhoo. It is the simplest route in the north.

Staying at Soneva Secret: take the seaplane if you land early and want to arrive at the jetty. Choose the Kulhudhuffushi flight plus speedboat if seaplanes are full or the weather is poor.
