For Malaysians curious about the northern Maldives, from a guesthouse on Hanimaadhoo to a remote private-island resort.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Haa Dhaalu is the southern half of the Thiladhunmathi atoll system in the far north, about an hour's flight from Male. It is the north's transport hub, with Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Kulhudhuffushi's own airport. Stays range from small guesthouses and an eco hotel on Hanimaadhoo to Soneva Secret, one of the most remote luxury resorts in the country.

Haa Dhaalu is where most journeys to the far north of the Maldives begin. Its airports at Hanimaadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi link the region to Male, and its islands mix busy towns with very quiet resorts.

This guide sits within our atolls and regions section. It explains what Haa Dhaalu is like, where you can stay and who it suits.

Where is Haa Dhaalu and what is it like?

Haa Dhaalu is the southern half of the Thiladhunmathi atoll system, with Haa Alifu to its north. Its official name is Thiladhunmathi Dhekunuburi.

Compared with the central atolls, it feels more like everyday Maldives. Kulhudhuffushi is a real town with shops, a hospital and traffic, while smaller islands are quiet farming and fishing communities.

Tourism is light. That is the appeal for travellers who want space, and the drawback for those who want lots of choice and short transfers.

What are the two airports?

Hanimaadhoo International (HAQ) is the main gateway. It became an international airport in 2012, when Maldivian started flights to Thiruvananthapuram in India, and Maldivian announced a Bengaluru route in 2025. The airport was redeveloped with a runway of about 2,465 metres and reopened on 9 November 2025.

Kulhudhuffushi (HDK) serves the town and nearby islands. Soneva lists it as one route to Soneva Secret, followed by about an hour by speedboat.

Flights from Male to Hanimaadhoo take about an hour on Maldivian, according to flight tracking listings. Our Haa Dhaalu transfer guide covers timings and the Malaysian flight fit in detail.

Where can you stay?

These options are tied to a current source checked on 12 October 2026. The north changes slowly, but always confirm a property is operating before you plan around it.

Soneva Secret is the stand-out resort, and Soneva asks guests to book transfers at least 72 hours before arrival. Its seaplanes are operated by Manta Air.

Hanimaadhoo is the most practical local island base because the airport is on the island itself. Booking sites list several guesthouses there, including some that run diving and snorkelling trips. Check our guide to what a bikini beach is before you go.

What is there to do?

Diving and snorkelling are the main activities. Dive operators in the north advertise reef sharks, channel dives and seasonal manta encounters, but conditions vary by month, so ask your dive centre what to expect on your dates.

On local islands, walking, cycling and village life are part of the stay. Kulhudhuffushi has cafes and shops, and you can see the working side of the Maldives that resort guests rarely meet.

Remember the local island norms: cover shoulders and knees in public, swimwear only on bikini beaches, and no alcohol outside resorts. Many shops close for prayers, and Friday mornings are quiet.

Who does Haa Dhaalu suit?

Good fit: divers and snorkellers who want quieter sites, couples looking for a very private resort, budget travellers who like a local island with an airport on it, and repeat visitors who have seen the central atolls.

Better elsewhere: first-timers on a three-night trip, older travellers who would rather avoid a second flight, and anyone who wants to hop between several islands by public boat. For those trips, North Male or South Ari is easier.

Malaysian Muslim travellers will find a familiar rhythm on local islands, with mosques close by and pork not sold. At resorts, confirm halal arrangements in writing.

How do you plan the trip from Malaysia?

Fly KLIA to Male on a morning arrival and connect north the same day. Batik Air's late arrival usually needs a night near the airport first, as explained in our Hulhumale island guide.

Allow at least five nights so the transfer does not eat too much of the holiday. Our explainer on domestic flight plus speedboat transfers shows how these connections are booked and what can go wrong.

Questions travellers ask

Is Haa Dhaalu the same as Haa Alifu?
No. They are two administrative atolls that together make up the Thiladhunmathi atoll system. Haa Alifu is the northern half and Haa Dhaalu the southern half. Hanimaadhoo airport is in Haa Dhaalu but also serves resorts in Haa Alifu, which is why the two names often appear together.
Can a family with young children stay in Haa Dhaalu?
Yes, but plan around the extra flight. A morning arrival from KLIA lets you reach the island the same day without an overnight stop. Ask your guesthouse or resort about cots, meal timing and the boat ride from the airport, and pack snacks for the domestic leg.
What is Kulhudhuffushi like for visitors?
Kulhudhuffushi is the largest town in the north, with shops, cafes, a regional hospital and its own airport. It is a working town rather than a beach destination. Most visitors pass through it, or use its airport as the gateway to Soneva Secret, which is about an hour away by speedboat.
Are there halal food options?
On local islands such as Hanimaadhoo, food in guesthouses and cafes is prepared by a Muslim community and pork is not sold. Resorts set their own policies, and Soneva Secret does not state halal certification on its transfer pages. Ask any resort directly about halal sourcing before you book.
