Getting to Lhaviyani from Male airport: options and limitations

The short answer

Lhaviyani is about 25 to 40 minutes from Male by air, so the transfer choice is mostly about timing and price. Here are the three routes side by side.

Option 1: Seaplane

The seaplane is the classic Lhaviyani arrival: about 40 minutes over the atolls, landing at the resort's jetty or platform. Kuredu says its chartered Trans Maldivian seaplanes operate from about 06:00 to 16:00 local time.

The limits are daylight and weight. Land in Male by about 15:30 to be safe, and stay within 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage.

Departing guests on late-night flights leave the resort on the last seaplane, usually between 13:00 and 16:00 per Kuredu, then wait at the airport. Ask about a day room or lounge if your flight leaves late.

Option 2: Domestic flight to Madivaru

Madivaru Airport opened in February 2022 with a 1,200-metre runway, the first in Lhaviyani. Flights from Velana take about 25 minutes, and the opening announcement said Kuredu, Komandoo and Hurawalhi are 10 to 25 minutes on by speedboat.

The big advantage is that flights were announced as running at night, which seaplanes cannot do. Fushifaru describes its route as a Manta Air flight plus about 15 minutes by speedboat.

Frequencies have changed since 2022, when three daily flights were timed around international arrivals. Ask your resort for the current timetable on your travel date.

Option 3: Speedboat from Male

A Naifaru guesthouse lists a shared speedboat of about 2.5 hours at USD 60 per person one way, about RM245 at RM4.09 (checked 12 Oct 2026). The same listing says the boat leaves Male once daily and does not run on Fridays.

This suits budget travellers with time. It is a poor fit for young children, older travellers or anyone prone to seasickness. A public ferry also serves the atoll, but we could not confirm a current timetable or fare from an official source.

Which transfer fits your Malaysian flight?

The three nonstop flights from KLIA land at very different times. Use this as a starting rule.

• AirAsia, lands about 09:50: any option works. The seaplane is comfortable with time to spare.
• Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25: seaplane or flight both work; allow for waiting in the seaplane lounge.
• Batik Air, lands about 21:55: no seaplane. Ask whether a late Madivaru flight and boat run that night; otherwise stay in Hulhumale and fly in the morning.

On the way home, plan the resort departure around your flight time. A morning seaplane or flight usually connects with a midday departure, but ask the resort to confirm before you book.

Cost: what to ask for

Lhaviyani resorts set their own transfer prices, often per adult and per child return, and these change by season. We did not find a current official price to quote, apart from the Naifaru speedboat above.

When you compare quotations, ask for:

• The transfer mode (seaplane or flight) and whether it is shared or private.
• The price per adult and per child, return, with taxes.
• The luggage allowance and excess rate.
• What happens if your flight is delayed past the last seaplane.

Who each route suits

The seaplane suits honeymooners and first-timers on morning flights who want the aerial view. The Madivaru flight suits late arrivals, families with more luggage and anyone who wants flexibility.
