Getting to Thaa from Male airport: options and limitations

For travellers heading to COMO Maalifushi or a Thaa guesthouse island who need the connection from Male to work.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Thaa is far south of Male, so you fly. COMO Maalifushi guests take a seaplane of about 60 minutes. Guesthouse guests take a Maldivian domestic flight of about 45 minutes to an hour to Thimarafushi Airport, then a speedboat of about 15 minutes. Morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals from KLIA can connect the same day; the Batik Air evening arrival needs a night near Male.

Thaa is one of the longer transfers from Male, so the route you choose shapes your first and last days. There is no boat option that works for most holidaymakers.

If you have not chosen where to stay, start with our Thaa atoll guide. This page covers only how you get there and back.

Which routes go to Thaa?

There are two routes: the COMO seaplane to the resort, and a domestic flight to Thimarafushi for local islands.

Thimarafushi Airport opened in September 2013 and has a 1,200 m runway. COMO staff meet resort guests at Male arrivals.

How does each route fit your KLIA flight?

Your Malaysian flight decides whether you reach Thaa on arrival day.

AirAsiaAbout 09:50YesLikely, depends on the day's schedule
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25YesCheck the afternoon flight time
Batik AirAbout 21:55NoNo

Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset, so land by about 15:30. Domestic flights to Thimarafushi are few, so check the schedule before booking your KLIA flight, and plan a Hulhumale night if they do not line up.

What does the transfer cost?

Treat this as a planning range, not a quote. One travel guide gives about USD 250 to 600 per person return for flights to Thimarafushi (amaldives.com, checked 12 Oct 2026).

At RM4.09 per USD, that is about RM1,023 to RM2,454 per person return. COMO publishes its seaplane prices in a separate flyer; ask the resort for the current per person rate and whether GST is included.

Add the figure to the trip cost calculator.

Luggage and timing limits

Trans Maldivian seaplanes allow 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage. Domestic flight allowances vary by airline and fare, so ask whoever books the flight.

Send your international flight numbers as soon as they are ticketed. Tell the resort or guesthouse immediately if anything changes.

A sample arrival day from KLIA

This is how a typical day can look on the AirAsia morning flight. Maldives time is 3 hours behind Malaysia.

About 10:30Meet COMO staff or your guesthouse contact
Late morning to afternoonCOMO seaplane of about 60 minutes, or the Thimarafushi domestic flight
AfternoonSpeedboat of about 15 minutes to a nearby island, then check in

If the day's Thimarafushi flight leaves before you can clear immigration, you will wait for the next one, which may be the following day.

What to ask before you book the transfer

  • Which flight to Thimarafushi will you book for me, and at what time?
  • What is the return price per adult and per child, including taxes?
  • How much checked and hand luggage is allowed, and what does excess cost?
  • How long is the speedboat from Thimarafushi to my island, and what does it cost?
  • For COMO: what is the latest arrival for a same-day seaplane, and is a private seaplane possible for our group?

Ask for the answers in writing before you pay.

Getting home: the return transfer

The return leg is the riskier one, because a missed domestic flight can cost you your international departure. With few daily flights to and from Thimarafushi, there may be no later option that day.

Book the return so you land at Male several hours before your KLIA flight, or the day before. A last night in Hulhumale is the calm choice for families and older travellers.

Can you combine Thaa with another atoll?

Yes, but it adds cost. Most travellers return to Male between atolls, since domestic routes run mainly to and from the capital.

A common pattern is two or three nights near Male, then four or five in Thaa. That spreads the risk of a missed connection and gives a softer start after the KLIA flight.

Who each route suits

The COMO seaplane suits honeymooners and families with a luxury budget who land in the morning. The domestic flight suits surfers, divers and budget travellers heading to Thimarafushi, Veymandoo or Guraidhoo.

If the transfer time or cost feels too much, an atoll with its own busier airport, such as Dhaalu, is easier. See our atolls and regions hub for other options. Times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Can I take a ferry or speedboat from Male to Thaa?
We found no current public speedboat or ferry from Male to Thaa that suits a holiday schedule. Government ferries mainly link islands within an atoll. Treat the domestic flight as the standard route, and ask your guesthouse whether they can arrange a boat from Thimarafushi to other islands.
How many flights a day go to Thimarafushi?
Sources differ, with some describing one or two flights a day. That is fewer than busier routes, so choose your flight before you lock in a guesthouse transfer, and expect timings to change with the airline's schedule. Your guesthouse can usually book the flight and boat together.
Can a group of friends charter a seaplane to COMO Maalifushi?
COMO says groups of up to 10 can book a private seaplane directly to the resort through its reservations team. This can suit a group arriving on a later flight, within daylight hours. Ask for the price, luggage rules and latest departure time in writing.
How much buffer should I leave on the way home?
Leave several hours between landing back at Male and your KLIA flight. With few daily domestic flights and weather-dependent seaplanes, a delay can push you close to your departure. Many travellers spend the last night in Hulhumale, which removes the risk entirely.
