Thaa atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want a remote southern atoll with very few visitors, and need to know whether the long transfer is worth it.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Thaa, officially Kolhumadulu, is a remote atoll in the south of the Maldives with one resort, COMO Maalifushi, a 60-minute seaplane from Male. Local islands such as Thimarafushi, Veymandoo, Guraidhoo and Vilufushi are reached by a Maldivian domestic flight to Thimarafushi Airport, then a short speedboat. It suits experienced Maldives travellers, surfers and couples who value seclusion over choice.

Thaa is one of the least visited atolls in the Maldives. It has a single luxury resort and a scattering of village islands, a long way south of Male.

For how Thaa fits among the other regions, see our atolls and regions hub. This page covers what the atoll offers and who it suits.

Where is Thaa, and what is it called?

Thaa sits in the south of the country, south of Meemu and north of Laamu. The government atoll portal gives its name as Kolhumadulu.

The distance is the defining fact. Thimarafushi Airport is roughly 220 km from Male by air, so every trip involves a seaplane or domestic flight.

What can you stay at in Thaa?

Thaa has one resort and a small number of guesthouses on its inhabited islands.

VeymandooLocal islandGuesthouses listed, some aimed at surfers

COMO states that Maalifushi was the first and only resort to open in Thaa. Guesthouse details come from booking listings, not official registers, so confirm each property is operating and registered.

How do you get to Thaa from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take the COMO seaplane or a domestic flight to Thimarafushi.

  • COMO seaplane: about 60 minutes from Male to the resort. COMO staff meet guests at arrivals and offer the Manta Air lounge while you wait.
  • Domestic flight: Maldivian flies Male to Thimarafushi; travel guides give about 45 minutes to an hour, then a speedboat of about 15 minutes to nearby islands.

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) give time to connect. Batik Air (about 21:55) needs a night near Male. Full detail is in getting to Thaa from Male airport.

Surf, reefs and what to do

Thaa's draw is space and untouched water. Travel guides name dive sites such as Guraidhoo Corner and Thimarafushi Thila, and listings mention surf breaks near Veymandoo and Hirilandhoo.

COMO notes April, between the monsoons, as a popular month for divers because the water is clearest. Guesthouses typically offer snorkel trips, fishing and sandbank visits, priced per person.

We found no official marine protected area for Thaa, so none is listed on this page.

How long to stay in Thaa

Plan at least five nights on a local island, since you spend part of arrival and departure days travelling. Four or more nights suits COMO Maalifushi, given the cost and length of the seaplane.

Many travellers add a night in Hulhumale at either end to protect international connections.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food: guesthouses serve Maldivian food without pork or alcohol. At COMO, ask in writing which dishes are halal.
  • Prayer: each inhabited island has a mosque; ask your guesthouse about prayer times.
  • Dress: on local islands, cover shoulders and knees, and swim in swimwear only at a designated bikini beach.
  • Green Tax: USD 12 per guest per night at the resort, USD 6 at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. Under 2s exempt.
  • Supplies: remote islands have limited shops, so bring medicines, sunscreen and some US dollars in small notes.

Run the numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Who Thaa suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Thaa suits repeat visitors, surfers, divers and couples who want few other tourists. COMO Maalifushi suits honeymooners and families with a luxury budget who accept a 60-minute seaplane.

It suits less well if this is your first trip, if you travel with very young children on a tight budget, or if you want lots of activities. For a resort atoll with more choice and its own airport, see the Dhaalu atoll guide, or weigh a local island versus resort stay in Thaa. Times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Thaa a good first trip to the Maldives?
Usually not, unless you are going to COMO Maalifushi and the price suits you. The local islands are remote, with few tourist services and longer, costlier transfers than atolls near Male. First-timers on a budget often enjoy Maafushi or South Ari more, then try Thaa on a later trip when they want something quieter.
Is Thaa good for surfing?
Travel guides and guesthouse listings describe surf breaks near Veymandoo, Thimarafushi and Hirilandhoo, and some guesthouses cater to surfers. Thaa is not one of the established surf charter regions, so information is thinner. Ask the guesthouse about the breaks, season, board hire and boat costs before you commit.
Does COMO Maalifushi suit families?
COMO describes Maalifushi as welcoming to families and has a dedicated family page, with rooms, suites, water villas and larger Residences. Ask the resort about kids' activities, babysitting and connecting options for your children's ages. Note the 60-minute seaplane, which some young children find long.
Are there ATMs and clinics on Thaa's local islands?
Larger inhabited islands in the Maldives usually have a health centre and shops, but we have not confirmed ATMs or clinic hours on each Thaa island. Carry enough US dollars in small notes, bring personal medicines, and ask your guesthouse what is available on the island before you travel.
