Getting to Vaavu from Male airport

You are heading to a Vaavu guesthouse or resort and need to match the boat or seaplane to your KLIA flight.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Vaavu has no airport, so everyone arrives by sea or seaplane. Shared speedboats reach Fulidhoo in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, resorts such as Cinnamon Velifushi are about 90 minutes by speedboat or 20 to 25 minutes by seaplane, and the public ferry takes several hours on limited days. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals connect the same day; Batik Air does not.

Key facts

  • Domestic airport

    None in Vaavu

How do you reach Vaavu?

By speedboat, seaplane or public ferry. Vaavu has no domestic airport, so there is no flight option.

Guesthouse islands use shared speedboats or the ferry. Resorts arrange their own speedboat or seaplane. For the bigger picture, read Maldives airport transfers explained and the Vaavu atoll guide.

What it costs in ringgit

At RM4.09 per USD, a USD 45 shared speedboat each way is about RM184 per person one way, or RM368 return. For a couple, that is about RM736 return.

The public ferry at around USD 3 is about RM12 per person, but costs you most of a day. Run your full trip in the trip cost calculator.

One guide lists Male departures around 10:00, while an operator listing shows 11:00. Ask your guesthouse for the exact time on your arrival day.

The public ferry option

A government public ferry links Male with Vaavu islands on a few days a week. It is very cheap but slow, and does not run on Fridays.

Timetables change and are not reliably published online, so check the latest before relying on it. See where to verify public ferry timetables and the guide to ferry travel with large luggage.

Arrival day, step by step

For a morning arrival on AirAsia, a typical Fulidhoo arrival day looks like this:

  1. Land at Velana at about 09:50 and clear immigration with your IMUGA declaration ready.
  2. Meet the guesthouse contact or boat crew at the arrivals hall, as arranged by message.
  3. Board the shared speedboat around late morning, depending on the operator's schedule.
  4. Arrive at Fulidhoo around midday or early afternoon and walk to your guesthouse.

Malaysia Airlines arrivals at about 11:25 may have to wait for an afternoon boat. Ask your guesthouse what time the boat actually leaves on your date.

For a resort, the resort's own team meets you at arrivals and walks you to the speedboat or seaplane desk. Send them your flight number at least 72 hours ahead.

The return trip

Plan the return as carefully as the arrival. Shared speedboats back to Male run at fixed times, often early, so check that the last boat reaches the airport at least three hours before your KLIA flight.

If your flight home leaves in the morning, consider spending the last night in Hulhumale. That removes the risk of a weather delay on the crossing.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the transfer included in my rate, and what does it cost per adult and child?
  • What time does the boat leave Male on my arrival date, and where do I meet the crew?
  • What happens if the sea is too rough to cross?
  • How much luggage can I bring, and is there a charge for extra bags?

Limitations to plan around

  • No flights: bad weather can delay or cancel speedboats, and there is no air backup except resort seaplanes.
  • Daylight seaplanes: land by about 15:30 if your resort uses one.
  • Rough crossings: May to November brings more swell; older travellers and young children may prefer the seaplane.
  • Fixed shared boat times: you may wait a few hours at the airport after an early landing.

Who each route suits

Budget travellers and divers are well served by the shared speedboat. Honeymooners and families with toddlers at Cinnamon Velifushi may find the seaplane worth the extra cost.

If you are combining Vaavu with Maafushi, the ferry or a guesthouse speedboat between the two islands is often easier than going back through Male. See moving between Maafushi and Fulidhoo.

Questions travellers ask

Is the speedboat to Vaavu rough?
It can be. The crossing from Male to Vaavu is in open sea, and the southwest monsoon from about May to November brings more swell. Take seasickness tablets before boarding, sit towards the back, and keep a bag with essentials on your lap. If the resort offers a seaplane, it avoids the crossing.
Can I use the public ferry with big suitcases?
Possible, but awkward. Ferries have limited luggage space and jetty steps, and the journey takes hours. Travel light if you plan to use the ferry, and ask your guesthouse to meet you at the Fulidhoo jetty. Our large luggage ferry guide explains the practical limits.
Do I need to book the shared speedboat in advance?
Yes, in most cases. Guesthouses usually arrange the shared speedboat and send a meeting point at Velana airport. Give them your flight number and arrival time when you book the room, and confirm the boat time again two days before you fly.
Does Cinnamon Velifushi charge for the seaplane?
Tour operators describe the seaplane as available on request for an extra charge, with the speedboat as the usual transfer. Ask the resort for both prices per adult and child, and whether the transfer is included in your package.
