Vaavu: local island or resort for your holiday?

You like the idea of quiet Vaavu and need to decide between a simple guesthouse island and one of its few resorts.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

In Vaavu, a guesthouse on Fulidhoo or Keyodhoo suits divers, snorkellers and budget travellers who enjoy village life, halal food and no alcohol. A resort such as Cinnamon Velifushi suits couples and families who want a water villa, a pool, alcohol and a seaplane option. Vaavu has only a few resorts, so the guesthouse islands carry most of the choice.

Best for

  • divers
  • quiet local island stays

Worth knowing

  • Channel dives such as Fotteyo Kandu and Miyaru Kandu
  • Smallest administrative atoll by population, with a handful of guesthouse islands

The short verdict by traveller type

  • Divers on a budget: a Keyodhoo or Fulidhoo guesthouse with a local dive centre.
  • Couples wanting quiet: Fulidhoo, small enough to walk around in minutes.
  • Honeymooners: Cinnamon Velifushi, with water villas and a seaplane option.
  • Families with young children: a resort is easier; a guesthouse works for relaxed families with confident swimmers.
  • Older travellers: a resort reached by seaplane, unless a 90-minute boat ride is fine.

What the local islands offer

Guide listings checked October 2026 show about 25 guesthouses on Fulidhoo, 17 on Keyodhoo, 10 on Thinadhoo and 5 on Felidhoo. These counts are indicative and change often.

Fulidhoo is the classic choice, with a bikini beach described by guesthouses and marine life at the jetty. Read the Fulidhoo island guide and the Keyodhoo island guide.

What the resorts offer

Vaavu has only a handful of resorts. Cinnamon Velifushi is a modern resort with beach and water villas, reached by a 90-minute speedboat or a seaplane of about 20 minutes according to its fact sheet.

Alimatha and Dhiggiri are older resorts known among divers for their access to the channels, now listed by travel guides under the NAKAI brand. Confirm names, villa types and meal plans directly, as we have not reached official fact sheets for them.

How a day differs on each

On Fulidhoo or Keyodhoo, the day revolves around boat trips. Guesthouses arrange snorkelling at nearby reefs, sandbank visits and dives with local centres, and you return for lunch or a nap. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at the guesthouse and a walk to the jetty.

At a Vaavu resort, you stay mostly on one island. The beach, the pool, the spa and the dive centre fill the day, with excursions booked through the resort. Resorts here are small, so nights are calm.

What to check before booking either

  • Dive centre: which sites it uses, how often it visits Fotteyo, and minimum certification.
  • Meal plan: many guesthouses include breakfast only; resorts often sell all-inclusive packages.
  • Transfer: shared speedboat times, or resort speedboat versus seaplane prices.
  • Prayer and halal needs: mosques are close by on local islands; at a resort, ask about prayer facilities.
  • Payment: carry US dollars for guesthouse islands, since ATMs are limited.

How the costs differ

For two adults over four nights, Green Tax at a guesthouse is USD 6 x 2 x 4 = USD 48, about RM196 at RM4.09. At a resort it is USD 12 x 2 x 4 = USD 96, about RM393.

Transfers show a similar gap. A shared speedboat at about USD 45 each way is about RM736 return for two, before any seaplane upgrade at a resort. Use the trip cost calculator with real quotes.

Decision rule

Pick a guesthouse if you will spend your days diving or snorkelling and want halal meals and village life. Pick a resort if your days centre on the villa, pool and beach, or if alcohol and a seaplane matter.

Vaavu also pairs well with a second island. Many travellers combine Fulidhoo with Maafushi; see moving between Maafushi and Fulidhoo.

Splitting a stay

A split stay works well in Vaavu. Spend two or three nights on Fulidhoo for the village feel and jetty marine life, then move to a resort for a final treat. Ask the resort whether it can collect you from the guesthouse island by boat, which saves a trip back through Male.

When a different atoll works better

If you want a wider choice of resorts or whale sharks, compare South Ari's local island and resort options. Guesthouse counts and transfer prices change, so confirm before paying a deposit.

Questions travellers ask

Which Vaavu guesthouse island is best for a first trip?
Fulidhoo is the usual first choice. It is small and walkable, has the most guesthouses in Vaavu according to listings, and is known for nurse sharks and stingrays near the jetty. Keyodhoo and Thinadhoo are quieter and lean more towards divers.
Can I visit a Vaavu resort for the day from a guesthouse?
Some resorts sell day passes to guests from local islands, but this varies and needs advance booking. Ask your guesthouse whether a nearby resort accepts day visitors, the price per person, and what it includes, such as lunch or use of the pool.
Are Alimatha and Dhiggiri still dive resorts?
They have long been known as dive-focused resorts close to Fotteyo and Miyaru Kandu. Travel guides now list them under the NAKAI brand. Check the current name, dive centre and transfer directly with the resort, since operators and brands change.
Is Vaavu suitable for a family with young children?
It can be. A resort gives you a pool, a lagoon and easier meals. A guesthouse works if the children are happy with simple rooms and you avoid the roughest monsoon crossings. The channels are for experienced divers, so plan snorkelling near the beach or jetty instead.
