Addu: local island guesthouse or resort?

You have settled on Addu and now need to choose between a guesthouse on the causeway and a resort island.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Addu is one of the few atolls where both choices are real. Guesthouses on Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Meedhoo suit divers, cyclists and budget travellers who want local life. Resorts such as Canareef and South Palm suit couples and families who want a lagoon, a pool and simple transfers, while Equator Village on Gan sits in between.

Best for

  • history
  • cycling
  • diving
  • local island stays with a resort nearby

Worth knowing

  • Gan International Airport
  • Causeway linking Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo
  • Former British RAF base at Gan
  • British Loyalty wreck and manta cleaning stations

Which should you choose in Addu?

Choose a guesthouse if you want to dive, cycle the causeway and live alongside a Maldivian town. Choose a resort if you want a lagoon, a pool, alcohol on offer and very little planning after the flight.

Addu makes the choice easier than most atolls because both are close to Gan airport. Read the Addu atoll guide first if you are still deciding on the atoll.

What a guesthouse stay is like

Guesthouses in Addu are small and run by local families or dive teams. You eat Maldivian halal food, cycle or take taxis, and plan your own days.

The trade-offs: local island rules apply, so there is no alcohol and you cover shoulders and knees in villages. Beaches near town are public, and we could not confirm a designated bikini beach from an official source, so ask your host. Our local island travel hub explains these rules.

What a resort stay is like

Canareef and South Palm sit on their own islands, a short boat from Gan. Listings describe beach and overwater villas, pools and the usual resort restaurants, and all-inclusive packages at some properties.

Shangri-La Villingili welcomed its first guests after five years of closure and is adding facilities in stages. It is the luxury option, with the country's only par-4, nine-hole golf course according to Shangri-La, but check which facilities run on your dates.

How the costs differ

We found no dated official rates for Addu guesthouses or resorts, so compare on these fixed differences:

ItemGuesthouseResort
Green TaxUSD 6 per guest per nightUSD 12 per guest per night
Boat transferUsually noneCanareef: USD 80 adult, USD 40 child, return (listing, 2024 to 2026)
MealsOften included or cheap in townMeal plan adds a large share of the bill
Taxes on room17% Tourism GST, service charge where applied17% Tourism GST plus 10% service charge

For a couple on four nights, Green Tax alone differs by USD 48: (12 − 6) × 2 guests × 4 nights. That is about RM196 at RM4.09 per USD. Run full quotes in the trip cost calculator.

A split stay works well here

Because everything is close to Gan, a split stay is easy. Spend two or three nights in a causeway guesthouse diving and cycling, then two or three nights at a resort before the flight home.

You can also add Fuvahmulah by ferry for tiger shark diving. Check ferry days, since public ferries do not run on Fridays.

Questions to ask before you book

For a guesthouse:

  • Is airport pickup from Gan included, and how long is the drive?
  • Which beach can guests use for swimming, and is swimwear allowed there?
  • Are bicycles provided, and are meals included?
  • Which dive centre do you work with?

For a resort:

  • What is the speedboat transfer price per adult and child, with tax?
  • Which villas suit a family of four, and is there a kids club?
  • Which meal plans are offered, and which outlets serve halal food?
  • For Shangri-La, which restaurants, villas and facilities are open on our dates?

Ask for every answer in writing, with the total price shown per room per night including taxes. That makes guesthouse and resort quotes easy to compare.

Families, older travellers and Muslim travellers

Families with young children usually do better at a resort, where the lagoon is calm and meals are on site. Equator Village is a middle path, with easy airport access and the causeway islands on the doorstep.

Older travellers should weigh the walking and taxi rides of a guesthouse stay against a resort's short paths. Muslim travellers often enjoy the town guesthouses, where food is halal by default and mosques are close; at resorts, ask about halal outlets first.

Who should choose what

Guesthouse: divers, cyclists, solo travellers, Muslim travellers who prefer an alcohol-free setting, and budget groups. Resort: honeymooners, families with young children and older travellers who want short walks and calm water.

If you want a classic water villa trip with the shortest journey, an atoll nearer Male is a better fit. Details and properties change, so confirm when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Equator Village a resort or a local island hotel?
It sits on Gan, a causeway island next to the airport, about 1 km from the terminal. Listings describe 78 rooms with balconies or patios, and all-inclusive rates as an option. It gives easy cycling access to the causeway islands but lacks the private island feel of Canareef or South Palm.
Can guesthouse guests visit the resorts for the day?
Some Maldivian resorts sell day passes, but policies vary and some do not offer them. Ask Canareef or South Palm directly about a day visit, the boat and what is included. A day visit is a way to enjoy a resort lagoon while sleeping in a guesthouse.
Which is better for a honeymoon in Addu?
A resort. Canareef and South Palm offer beach and overwater villas, and Shangri-La Villingili is reopening in stages. Guesthouses follow local island rules, with no alcohol and modest dress in villages, which suits some couples but not those after a classic Maldives honeymoon.
