Addu (Seenu) atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want a southern Maldives trip with a mix of history, diving and island life, and need to know how Addu works from KLIA.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Addu is the southernmost atoll, reached by a domestic flight of about 70 to 90 minutes from Male to Gan. Four islands, Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo, are joined by a causeway road of about 14 km, so you can cycle or drive between them. It suits divers, history lovers and travellers mixing guesthouse and resort nights, more than first-time honeymooners.

Where is Addu, and what is it like?

Addu (Seenu) is the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, just south of the equator and about 545 km from Male. It is the country's second city region, Addu City, rather than a resort-only atoll.

The western islands are joined by a causeway road, so Addu feels more connected than anywhere else. You can cycle past villages, wetland, the old airfield and the reef in one day. Our atolls and regions hub compares it with other regions.

Herathera, Ismehela Hera, VillingiliResort islandsCanareef, South Palm, Shangri-La

Feydhoo and Maradhoo have little visitor information of their own. Treat them as practical bases on the causeway, a short ride from Gan airport, rather than places to plan a trip around.

How do you get to Addu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a domestic flight to Gan (GAN). Resortlife gives about 70 to 90 minutes on Maldivian or Manta Air, and lists departures around late morning and early evening.

From Gan, guesthouses on the causeway are a short drive. Resorts send a speedboat of about 10 to 20 minutes, according to resort listings. Full timings are on our getting to Addu from Male airport page.

Where to stay: resorts and guesthouses

Addu has a small, varied set of resorts, plus guesthouses across the causeway islands:

Diving, wildlife and history

Divers come for the British Loyalty, a Second World War tanker wreck that guides describe as among the largest in the Maldives, lying at about 16 to 33 m. Manta cleaning stations and channel sharks are also listed by travel guides.

On land, the Eedhigali Kilhi wetland in Hithadhoo is part of Addu Nature Park, with mangroves and birdlife. Gan's RAF heritage, including old buildings and a memorial, appeals to history readers. Fuvahmulah's tiger sharks are a ferry ride away; see our Fuvahmulah guide.

Budget basis for a guesthouse stay

This section covers the budget questions readers ask about Feydhoo and Maradhoo. We found no dated official guesthouse rates, so use these planning points rather than prices:

  • Green Tax: USD 6 per guest per night at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer, USD 12 at resorts.
  • Tourism GST: 17% on accommodation, plus a service charge where applied.
  • Domestic flight: quoted in US dollars per person, the largest fixed cost after KLIA flights.
  • Local transport: causeway taxis or bicycles; ask your guesthouse for airport pickup.

Ask each guesthouse for a written quote with tax per room per night, then use the trip cost calculator.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Money: travel guides list ATMs from several banks in Addu City.
  • Health: Hithadhoo has hospital services, according to travel guides. Serious cases are referred to Male or abroad.
  • Dress: cover shoulders and knees on inhabited islands; swimwear at resorts.
  • Return timing: take a domestic flight that lands in Male at least three hours before your KLIA departure.

How long to stay, and a sample plan

Four nights is the minimum, because each travel day uses most of a morning or afternoon. Five or six nights lets you mix town, reef and resort.

A five-night shape: day 1 fly KLIA to Male and on to Gan; day 2 cycle the causeway to Hithadhoo and the wetland; days 3 and 4 dive the British Loyalty and the channels, or take a ferry day to Fuvahmulah; day 5 move to a resort; day 6 fly Gan to Male and home.

Cycling is the easiest way to see the causeway islands. Ask your guesthouse for bicycles, and ride early or late to avoid the midday heat.

Who Addu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Addu suits divers, cyclists, history lovers and travellers who want local life with a resort nearby. It also suits a combined trip with Fuvahmulah.

Choose elsewhere for a short first trip or a classic water villa honeymoon, where Kaafu, Baa or Ari are quicker. Families with toddlers may prefer an atoll without a domestic flight. Confirm details when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Feydhoo or Maradhoo worth staying on?
They can work as a base, because they sit on the causeway between Gan and Hithadhoo. Discover Addu lists a few guesthouses on Feydhoo and on Maradhoo-Feydhoo, mostly aimed at divers. We found little independent visitor information, so treat them as a convenient, practical base rather than a destination, and confirm transfers and beach access with the property.
Is Shangri-La Villingili open?
Shangri-La says it welcomed its first guests after five years of closure and will add facilities in stages as restoration continues. Local reports put the reopening at the end of December 2025. Ask the resort in writing which villas, restaurants and activities are running on your dates before you book.
Can I visit Fuvahmulah from Addu?
Yes. RTL public ferries ran between Addu and Fuvahmulah twice a day in March 2025, taking about 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes, with no Friday service. Private speedboats run on request. It makes Addu a good partner for a tiger shark dive trip.
Is Addu good for Muslim travellers?
Addu City is a large Maldivian community with mosques and halal local food. Guesthouses follow local island rules, with no alcohol. At resorts, ask which outlets serve halal food and whether prayer mats and qibla direction are provided.
