Shaviyani atoll travel guide for Malaysians

For Malaysians drawn to a northern resort with a long house reef and fewer neighbours, who want to know what the trip involves.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Shaviyani is a northern atoll whose tourism centres on two large international resorts, JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa on Vagaru and Sirru Fen Fushi, the former Fairmont Maldives. Both are reached mainly by seaplane from Male, so a morning AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines arrival works best. Local island tourism is small, which makes Shaviyani mainly a resort destination.

Shaviyani is a northern atoll that most Malaysians know through its two big resorts rather than its islands. It is quiet, reef-rich and a seaplane ride from Male.

This guide is part of our atolls and regions section. It explains where Shaviyani is, what you can stay in, and who it suits.

Where is Shaviyani?

Shaviyani's official name is Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi, the northern part of the Miladhunmadulu atoll system. It lies south of Haa Dhaalu and north of Noonu.

The atoll is made up of fishing and farming communities and a small number of resort islands. Funadhoo has a domestic airport (FND), which gives an alternative to the seaplane.

The feel is open and uncrowded. You are unlikely to see another resort from your beach.

What resorts are in Shaviyani?

Two internationally branded resorts dominate the atoll's tourism. Both were confirmed against their own or their transfer operator's pages on 12 October 2026.

Sirru Fen Fushi's official site lists villa types from Sunrise and Sunset Beach Villas to two- and three-bedroom beach and water villas with private pools. The Sirru Residences are three beachfront villas that can combine into a seven-bedroom retreat, which suits extended families.

Neither resort states halal certification on the pages we checked. Ask in writing about halal sourcing and kitchen separation if this matters for your group.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a seaplane to your resort. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so land in Male by about 15:30.

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) both give enough time. Batik Air lands about 21:55, which means a night near the airport and a seaplane the next morning.

Shared seaplanes can stop at another resort on the way, so allow some extra time. The full route comparison, including the Funadhoo flight, is in our Shaviyani transfer guide.

What is there to do?

Shaviyani is a reef destination first. Sirru Fen Fushi describes a 9 km house reef reached through its dive centre, which gives snorkellers a lot of water to explore without a boat trip.

Both resorts run diving, spa and water sports programmes. Ask each resort which excursions are included and which are charged, since this varies by meal plan.

Visibility in the northern atolls is usually best in the drier northeast monsoon, roughly December to April. The wetter southwest monsoon, about May to November, brings more cloud and choppier crossings, but also lower resort rates and fewer guests.

For Malaysian families, the March and end-of-year school holidays fall in the drier months. Book seaplane-dependent trips early for those dates, as rooms and flights fill quickly.

Local island visits are possible as excursions through your resort. Dress modestly in villages, and remember alcohol is served only at resorts.

Who does Shaviyani suit?

Good fit: honeymoon couples who want a big-name resort without crowds, families who want a kids' club and a long reef, and multi-generation groups who need multi-bedroom villas.

Better elsewhere: budget travellers, local island fans, and anyone on a short three-night trip. Speedboat-access atolls near Male, or the guesthouse islands covered in our Maafushi travel guide, fit those trips better.

Older travellers should ask about seaplane boarding and steps, and consider the domestic flight if small floatplanes are a concern.

What should you budget for?

The seaplane is the main extra cost compared with a speedboat resort, and it is usually priced per person return by the resort. Ask for the transfer price separately so you can compare resorts fairly.

Room rates in Shaviyani sit at the luxury end of the market. Use the trip cost calculator to add flights, transfers, taxes and Green Tax to any quote you receive.

Questions travellers ask

Is Sirru Fen Fushi the same as the Fairmont Maldives?
Yes, it is the same island resort. It was known as Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi, and its official website now presents it as Sirru Fen Fushi, Private Lagoon Resort. Search for both names when you compare prices, as some agencies still list it under the Fairmont name.
Is Shaviyani good for families from Malaysia?
The two main resorts are large and family-equipped. Sirru Fen Fushi describes a Kids' Club with indoor and outdoor play and a section of the infinity pool. The seaplane leg is the main thing to plan, so pick a morning flight from KLIA and check the seaplane baggage limit for prams and car seats.
Can I stay on a local island in Shaviyani?
A few local islands have small guesthouses, but listings are thin and transfer details are inconsistent across booking sites. If a local island stay is your priority, atolls such as Kaafu or Alifu Dhaalu offer far more choice and simpler speedboat access from Male.
