Maldives trip cost for a family of four from Malaysia

Family costs do not scale neatly from a couple's price, because children change the room, transfer and meal lines in different ways.

Quick answer

For two adults and two children aged 2 to 11, a 4-night trip from KLIA works out at roughly RM13,000 to RM14,000 on a local island and about RM29,000 at a mid-range resort reached by speedboat. Children pay full Green Tax from age two, usually a seat price close to an adult fare, and often a nightly child supplement at resorts. These are worked estimates at RM4.09 per USD, not quotes.

Key facts

  • Green Tax for children

    Full rate from age 2

    Under 2s exempt

  • Child transfer price

Often 30% to 40% below adult

    Third-party guide, resort specific

  • Child supplement band

USD 75 to 200 per child per night

A family of four can do 4 nights in the Maldives for about RM13,000 on a local island, or about RM29,000 at a mid-range resort reached by speedboat. Children add more than most parents expect, because several charges are per head.

What does a family of four spend in 4 nights?

On our worked basis, two adults and two children aged 7 and 10 spend about RM13,400 on a local island and about RM29,100 at a mid-range resort. That is RM3,340 and RM7,275 per person respectively.

Assumptions, at RM4.09 per USD:

  • Local island: family room at USD 140 per night before tax, within the USD 60 to 180 guesthouse band.
  • Resort: villa at USD 450 plus a child supplement of USD 100 per child per night, so USD 650 before tax.
  • Transfers: Maafushi shared boat at USD 25 per person each way. The resort speedboat is USD 180 per adult return, and children pay 35% less.

Which charges change because you have children?

Five lines behave differently once children join the trip. Knowing which ones helps you ask the right questions.

  1. Green Tax: children pay the full per-night rate from age two, per MIRA. Under 2s are exempt.
  2. Flights: children over two need their own seat, usually priced close to an adult.
  3. Room: a standard villa may not take four people, so you may need a family villa or a second room.
  4. Child supplement: many five-star resorts add USD 75 to 200 per child per night on top of the villa rate (Holiday.com.mv band).
  5. Meals and transfers: children's meal plans are often 50% to 75% of the adult rate, and child transfers are often 30% to 40% cheaper.

Our page on charges for children and extra beds explains each of these in more depth.

How does a published package compare?

One published Malaysian package shows the child pricing clearly. HolidayGoGoGo's Arena Beach Maafushi 4D3N lists RM2,319 per adult twin share and RM1,799 for a child sharing a bed, valid to 31 October 2026 (checked 11 Oct 2026).

For two adults and two children that is 2 × 2,319 plus 2 × 1,799, which equals RM8,236 before flights. Add four return seats at RM1,500 each and the family total is about RM14,236 for 3 nights, with most meals and four excursions included.

That sits close to our DIY local-island estimate. It suggests a bundled package is reasonable value when the inclusions match what your family would buy anyway.

How does the child's age change the bill?

Under two is the cheapest age: no Green Tax and usually an infant lap fare. Some resorts also waive the child supplement for infants.

From two to about eleven, children pay Green Tax in full and take a seat, but often get transfer and meal discounts. From twelve, many resorts price children as adults. Always give exact ages on the date of travel when you ask for a quote.

How can a family keep the cost down?

The room is the biggest line, so the biggest saving comes from the right room choice. A resort that lets four sleep in one villa without a large supplement can save thousands of ringgit.

Other levers that work for Malaysian families:

  • Choose a resort reached by speedboat, not seaplane, since four seaplane fares add up fast.
  • Use the short school breaks in March or late August instead of the year-end holiday.
  • Pick full board instead of all-inclusive if the children will not use the drinks allowance.
  • Consider a split stay between a resort and a guesthouse.

Which option suits which family?

A local island suits families with older children who enjoy snorkelling trips and do not need a kids' club. Parents should be comfortable with modest dress outside bikini beaches.

A speedboat resort suits families with young children, grandparents or anyone who wants a pool, lagoon and meals in one place. Our guide to choosing a resort for a family of four covers what to look for.

Seaplane resorts and water villas suit families with a larger budget and children who swim confidently. To test your own mix of room, ages and dates, use the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Do children fly free to the Maldives?
Only infants under two usually fly on a lap fare, which is a fraction of the adult price plus taxes. Children from two take their own seat, and on most airlines their fare is close to the adult fare. Check each airline's child fare rules when you search, and count four seats for a family of four with children over two.
Can a family of four share one villa?
Some resorts allow two adults and two children in a standard villa, while others require a family villa or two connecting rooms. Ask for the maximum occupancy and the bedding arrangement before you compare prices. A villa that only takes three people can push you into a second room, which almost doubles the room line.
Is a local island suitable for young children?
It can be. Local islands are cheaper and have families living there, but beaches are public, swimwear is limited to bikini beaches and there are no kids' clubs. Families who want a lagoon, a pool and a kids' club in one place usually find a resort easier, especially with children under six.
When is the cheapest time for a family trip?
Malaysian school holidays, especially the year-end break from early December, coincide with peak Maldives demand. The short term breaks in March and late August are often cheaper. Check the dates against the Maldives monsoon too, since May to November is wetter but usually lower priced.
