Quick answer

Hithadhoo is the largest island and administrative centre of Addu City, at the far end of a 14 km causeway from Gan airport. It has the atoll's hospitals, banks, shops and a small cluster of guesthouses, plus Addu Nature Park with its wetlands and white terns. It suits nature lovers, cyclists and budget travellers who want town life; it suits less well couples wanting a lagoon resort feel.

Hithadhoo is where Addu lives day to day. It holds the city offices, the hospitals, the markets and most of the atoll's shops.

For the atoll overview and resort options, read the Addu (Seenu) atoll travel guide. The island directory compares other local islands.

What is Hithadhoo like?

It is a real town, not a guesthouse village built for tourists. aMaldives describes it as the administrative capital and largest island of Addu City, with government offices, shops and a local atmosphere.

The north of the island is wild and green. Visit Maldives says Addu Nature Park covers the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and Koattey, a protected area with mangroves and more than 28 bird species.

Who does Hithadhoo suit?

It suits travellers who enjoy local life and nature more than a polished beach. Use this table to check your fit.

Customs and dress

Hithadhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in public, and keep swimwear for places your guesthouse names.

Alcohol and pork are not sold. Friday prayers shape the day, with shops and the Nature Park closing for part of Friday morning and midday.

For swimwear rules across the Maldives, read what a bikini beach is in the Maldives.

Money, health and connectivity

aMaldives says Bank of Maldives, State Bank of India and Maldives Islamic Bank operate in Addu with ATMs. Small cafes often prefer cash, so carry rufiyaa or small US dollar notes.

Two hospitals on Hithadhoo treat non-trauma cases and offer dental care, according to aMaldives. Severe cases may be referred onward.

Getting around

Bicycles are the easiest way to explore, and many guesthouses lend them. Taxis, local buses and scooter rental also run along the causeway, according to aMaldives.

The Hithadhoo transfer guide explains the road leg from Gan airport.

Where you stay

Hithadhoo has a small cluster of guesthouses and hotels. Discover Addu lists Lagoon Lodge, Abuharee Grand, Vista Villa and Rekidhiye Inn, and aMaldives lists The Rose Garden House.

Food to try

Visit Maldives names Addu havaadhu, a curry spice mix unique to the atoll, and Addu bendi, a sweet snack made from young coconut. Gaadiya stalls sell king coconut and short eats.

Some guesthouse stays include time with a local family and a traditional meal, according to Visit Maldives.

When to choose somewhere else

Choose Gan for Equator Village and the RAF sites, or an Addu resort for lagoon swimming and a pool villa. Choose a South Male island if you only have 3 nights.

Choose Hithadhoo when you want town comforts, nature and a quieter, more local side of the Maldives.

How long to stay

Four nights is a practical minimum, because the domestic flight takes up part of the first and last days. That leaves two or three full days for the Nature Park, a boat trip and a ride to Gan.

Five or six nights suits divers, birdwatchers and anyone splitting the stay with an Addu resort. Families often find a slower pace with a pool day at a resort works well.

Ramadan and holidays

During Ramadan, cafes and shops change their hours, and daytime eating in public is discouraged for everyone. Guesthouses still serve guests, but menus may be smaller.

Muslim travellers from Malaysia often enjoy breaking fast with a local community, so ask your guesthouse whether that is possible. Check Ramadan dates for your year before you book.

Getting there in brief

Fly from Male to Gan in about 70 to 95 minutes, then drive about 14 to 16 km to Hithadhoo. Full timings are on the Hithadhoo transfer guide.

Questions travellers ask

Is Hithadhoo better than Gan as a base?
For most guesthouse travellers, yes. Hithadhoo has more shops, cafes, banks and the Nature Park, and more guesthouses to choose from. Gan is better if you want Equator Village, a short airport transfer or to be close to the RAF heritage sites. The two are linked by road, so you can see both from either base.
Is there a bikini beach on Hithadhoo?
We could not confirm a designated bikini beach on Hithadhoo. Ask your guesthouse where swimwear is accepted, or book a resort day trip for lagoon swimming. On roads, in shops and near mosques, cover shoulders and knees.
Is Hithadhoo suitable for Muslim travellers?
Yes. Hithadhoo is a Muslim town with mosques, halal food in local cafes and no alcohol or pork on sale. Friday prayers affect opening hours, including the Nature Park, which closes between about 10:00 and 14:00 on Fridays.
What medical care is available?
aMaldives says Hithadhoo has two hospitals treating non-trauma cases and dental care, with severe injuries referred onward. Bring regular medicines from Malaysia and buy travel insurance that covers evacuation, especially if you dive.
