How to get to Hithadhoo (Addu) from Male airport

You have booked a guesthouse on Hithadhoo and need to plan every leg from Velana airport to your door.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Fly from Male to Gan on Maldivian or Manta Air in about 70 to 95 minutes, then drive about 14 to 16 km along the causeway road to Hithadhoo. The road leg takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes by guesthouse pick-up or taxi. Morning arrivals from KLIA can usually reach Hithadhoo the same evening; a late Batik Air arrival needs a night in Hulhumale.

Getting there from Male airport

  • domestic flight + road: about 70 to 95 minutes flight to Gan, then about 14 to 16 km by road along the causewayNo dated Male to Gan fare confirmed; aMaldives (May 2026) gives USD 150 to 350 one way as the general domestic range. Guesthouses offer paid airport transfers

Hithadhoo has no airport of its own. You fly to Gan, then drive the causeway road to the other end of Addu City.

The flight leg is covered in detail on how to get to Gan (Addu) from Male airport. This page adds the road leg and a full door-to-door plan. For life on the island, read the Hithadhoo island guide.

What is the route from Male to Hithadhoo?

It is a flight, then a road transfer. Fly from Velana (MLE) to Gan (GAN), about 545 km, then travel about 14 to 16 km by road via Feydhoo and Maradhoo.

Maldivian flies to Gan daily, according to Visit Maldives, and Manta Air also serves the route. Resortlife gives a flight time of about 70 to 90 minutes, and aMaldives about 90 to 95 minutes.

The road leg in practice

Most guesthouses offer a paid airport pick-up. aMaldives lists one for The Rose Garden House on Hithadhoo, without a published price.

Taxis are booked by phone, and aMaldives says local buses also run along the connected islands. We did not find a dated taxi or bus fare from an official source, so ask your guesthouse for the current rate.

Allow about 20 to 30 minutes by car. This is our estimate for a 14 to 16 km road with village speed limits.

Door-to-door timing from KLIA

Here is a realistic plan for each nonstop Kuala Lumpur flight. Gan departure times come from one Maldivian schedule snapshot, so check live times.

KUL flightLands in Male (about)Gan flightReach Hithadhoo (about)
AirAsia09:50About 18:1020:15 to 20:45
Malaysia Airlines11:25About 18:1020:15 to 20:45
Batik Air21:55Next dayNext day

If a midday Gan flight runs on your date, AirAsia travellers may reach Hithadhoo by mid-afternoon. Leave at least three hours between landing in Male and the domestic flight.

What the transfer costs

We did not find a dated published Male to Gan fare. aMaldives (May 2026) gives USD 150 to 350 one way per person as the general domestic range, about RM614 to RM1,432 at RM4.09 per USD.

Add the road leg, which your guesthouse will quote. Build the full trip in the Hithadhoo cost guide.

Constraints to plan around

  • Do the IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before landing in Male.
  • Send your guesthouse your Gan flight number so the driver waits.
  • Domestic baggage is generally 20 to 25 kg checked plus 5 kg cabin, per aMaldives.
  • On your last day, leave Hithadhoo with time to spare, since taxis may be busy around flight times.

Families with young children and older travellers should prefer the afternoon Gan flight over a tight morning connection.

When a different island is easier

If you have only 3 nights, a South Male island reached by speedboat saves a flight each way. The Addu transfer options page compares Addu with closer atolls.

Your arrival checklist

  • Save your guesthouse's phone number and WhatsApp before you leave Malaysia.
  • Keep printed or offline copies of your Gan flight and guesthouse booking.
  • Carry some small US dollar notes for a taxi if your pick-up falls through.
  • Tell the guesthouse if you have bulky dive or fishing gear, so they send a suitable vehicle.
  • Buy a local SIM at Velana airport so you can call a taxi in Addu.

Going home

Your return Gan flight decides the last day. Ask your guesthouse to book the airport run for at least 90 minutes before departure.

If your Gan flight lands in Male in the afternoon and your KUL flight leaves the same night, keep at least three hours between them. Domestic delays happen, and a missed international flight is far dearer than a night in Hulhumale.

Older travellers and families with young children should ask for the driver to meet them inside the arrivals area at Gan, so nobody waits in the heat with luggage.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a speedboat from Male to Hithadhoo?
No practical one. Addu is about 545 km from Male, and visitors fly. Speedboats in Addu link Hithadhoo with nearby islands and resorts inside the atoll, and some guides list ferry or speedboat options from Hithadhoo to Hulhumeedhoo, not to Male.
How do I pay for a taxi in Addu?
Taxis are booked by phone rather than through an app, and most drivers expect cash. Carry rufiyaa or small US dollar notes. Ask your guesthouse for a trusted taxi number and the usual fare from Gan airport before you arrive.
Can I cycle from Gan airport to Hithadhoo?
It is possible, since the causeway is flat, but not with luggage after a long journey. Take a pick-up on arrival, then borrow a bicycle from your guesthouse to ride the road in the cooler morning or late afternoon.
Should I stay on Gan the first night?
Only if you land very late on Gan, or you want Equator Village for a night. Otherwise the road leg to Hithadhoo is short, so most travellers go straight to their guesthouse.
