What to do on Hithadhoo (Addu): Nature Park, birds, bikes and the reef

You are staying on Hithadhoo and want to know how to fill your days beyond the guesthouse.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Hithadhoo's highlight is Addu Nature Park, covering the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and Koattey, with canoeing among mangroves, boardwalks, birdwatching and guided snorkelling; foreigners pay USD 7 entry. Add a bike ride along the causeway to Gan, a dive or snorkel boat trip, and Addu food from gaadiya stalls. Swimming is best arranged through your guesthouse or a resort day trip.

Hithadhoo has more to do on land than most Maldives local islands. Its wetlands and birdlife set it apart.

For daily life and where to stay, read the Hithadhoo island guide. The Addu atoll guide covers the wider atoll.

Addu Nature Park

This is the top activity on Hithadhoo. Visit Maldives says the park covers the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and Koattey, a protected area on the island.

You can canoe among red mangroves in Bedhi bay, walk the boardwalks, ride a buggy, birdwatch, picnic and join guided snorkelling. Entry is MVR 5 for locals and USD 7 for foreigners.

Birdwatching and white terns

Visit Maldives says Koattey has more than 28 bird species, and Addu lies on a migratory route. The white tern, called Dhondheeni locally, is unique to Addu Atoll.

Bring binoculars from Malaysia. Early morning is the best time.

Cycle the causeway to Gan

The road from Hithadhoo through Maradhoo and Feydhoo to Gan is about 14 km and flat. Bicycles are often free at guesthouses, according to aMaldives.

At the Gan end you reach the RAF heritage sites and the airport. Our guide to what to do on Gan covers them.

Diving and snorkelling trips

Addu has coral reefs, manta rays, sharks and seahorses, says Visit Maldives. The British Loyalty wreck, the largest shipwreck in the Maldives, is about 25 minutes by boat.

Maldives Traveller says the wreck was scuttled inside the atoll, southeast of Hithadhoo, in January 1946. It is a dive site, not a snorkel site.

We did not find dated dive prices. Ask the dive centre for the full price with service charge and 17% GST.

Beach and swimming

We could not confirm a designated bikini beach on Hithadhoo. Ask your guesthouse where swimwear is accepted.

For lagoon swimming in a bikini, consider a resort day trip within Addu. Our page on bikini beaches in the Maldives explains the rules.

Food and town life

Try Addu havaadhu curry and Addu bendi, a young-coconut sweet, both named by Visit Maldives. Gaadiya stalls sell king coconut and short eats in the evenings.

Some guesthouses arrange a few hours with a local family, including a traditional meal, according to Visit Maldives.

A three-day plan

Day 1: Arrive from Gan airport, settle in, evening walk and gaadiya snacks.

Day 2: Morning Nature Park visit with canoeing and birdwatching. Afternoon rest, then a sunset bike ride.

Day 3: Morning dive or snorkel trip. Afternoon cycle to Gan for the RAF sites.

Divers may want an extra day. Budget the trip with the Hithadhoo cost guide.

Practical tips

Plan around the Nature Park's midday break and the Friday closure from 10:00 to 14:00. Mornings are cooler for both cycling and birdwatching.

Wear light long trousers or a sarong in town, and keep swimwear for places your guesthouse names. Bring insect repellent for the wetlands and a dry bag for canoeing.

For boat trips, ask the operator about life jackets and whether a guide swims with snorkellers. Children and weaker swimmers should wear a vest.

Who gets the most from Hithadhoo

Nature lovers, birdwatchers and cyclists get the most. Families enjoy the park and the bike rides, and older travellers appreciate the boardwalks and nearby hospitals.

Couples who want lagoon swimming and sunset bars will enjoy Hithadhoo more as part of a split stay with an Addu resort.

If rain arrives, which is more likely in the southwest monsoon from about May to November, swap the park for a cafe morning and a market walk, and move canoeing to a drier afternoon.

Questions travellers ask

Can I snorkel straight from the beach on Hithadhoo?
We could not confirm a safe public house reef entry. The Nature Park offers guided snorkelling, and dive centres run boat trips to Addu reefs. Currents near channels can be strong, so snorkel only where a guide or your guesthouse says it is safe, and never alone.
How long do I need in the Nature Park?
Two to three hours covers the boardwalks, a canoe paddle and a birdwatching stop. Avoid the midday break, and remember the shorter Friday and Sunday hours. Morning visits are cooler and better for birds.
Is the Nature Park good for children and older travellers?
Yes. Boardwalks and buggy rides make it accessible, according to Visit Maldives, and canoeing suits older children with an adult. Bring water, hats and insect repellent, because the wetlands are humid.
Where can I see the British Loyalty wreck?
Only on a dive. The wreck lies at about 16 to 33 metres, roughly 25 minutes by boat. Certified divers can book it through an Addu dive centre; snorkellers should join a reef trip instead.
