How much a local-island Maldives trip costs from Malaysia

Local islands are the lowest-cost way into the Maldives, and the main choice is whether to build the trip yourself or take a package.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

A local-island trip is the cheapest way to see the Maldives. On the ground, 3 nights on Maafushi cost about RM1,900 per person sharing if you build it yourself, against published Malaysian packages from about RM2,000 to RM2,320. Add a KLIA return flight from about RM1,155, and a complete trip lands around RM3,100 to RM3,700 per person. Figures checked 11 to 12 Oct 2026.

Key facts

  • Green Tax at small guesthouses

USD 6 per guest per night

Inhabited islands, 50 rooms or fewer

  • Maafushi shared airport boat

    USD 25 one way

  • Local cafe meal

    About USD 5 to 15

A local-island Maldives trip costs about RM1,900 to RM2,300 per person for 3 nights on the ground, then a KLIA return flight on top. That makes it the lowest-cost way to see the Maldives from Malaysia by a wide margin.

What does a DIY Maafushi trip cost?

Built yourself, 3 nights on Maafushi cost about RM1,930 per person for two people sharing. That covers the room, taxes, Green Tax, the airport boat, local meals and two excursions.

Line (3 nights, per person)WorkingRM
Guesthouse room, breakfast includedUSD 85 × 1.287 × 3 ÷ 2 × 4.09671
Green TaxUSD 6 × 3 nights × 4.0974
Shared airport speedboat, returnUSD 25 × 2 × 4.09205
Lunch and dinner at local cafesUSD 30 per day × 3 × 4.09368
Excursions (whale shark trip and sandbank)USD 150 × 4.09614

The room rate sits inside the USD 60 to 180 guesthouse band, and the meal and excursion figures follow Holiday.com.mv (checked 12 Oct 2026). The boat is the Maafushi.com shared price (checked 11 Oct 2026). These are estimates, not quotes.

How do Malaysian packages compare?

Published Malaysian local-island packages sit close to the DIY figure, and some bundle more. The key is to compare inclusions, not just the headline.

Package (checked 11 Oct 2026)Price per personWhat it includes
HolidayGoGoGo Arena Beach, Maafushi, 4D3NRM2,319 twin share, to 31 Oct 2026Speedboat, 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners, 4 excursions, Green Tax, taxes
12Fly Maafushi Island 4D3NFrom RM1,996, to 31 Oct 2027Not itemised on listing
Media Travel Free & Easy Maafushi 4D3NFrom RM1,300Not listed, confirm before comparing

The HolidayGoGoGo package includes more meals and trips than our DIY budget, so RM2,319 is fair value for travellers who want a set plan with halal meals. The lowest from-prices often cover only the room and boat, so ask for the inclusions in writing.

What does a complete trip cost with flights?

Add a KLIA to Male return to the ground cost. Traveloka showed a cheapest return of about RM1,155 on 11 October 2026, though dates with checked bags and good timings often cost RM1,300 to RM1,500.

So a complete 4D3N local-island trip lands around RM3,100 to RM3,800 per person. A fourth night adds roughly RM450 to RM650 per person on the same basis.

Morning arrivals on AirAsia (about 09:50) or Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) make the same-day boat easy. A Batik Air arrival around 21:55 may need a night near the airport, so add that cost if you choose it.

Should you take a package or build it yourself?

Use a simple rule: if a package includes at least the boat, most meals and two excursions you would book anyway, it is usually as cheap as DIY and much less work. If you want a quiet island, unusual dates or a longer stay, building it yourself gives more control.

First-timers, older travellers and groups who want halal meals arranged tend to prefer a package. Repeat visitors and divers often build their own, choosing the guesthouse and dive centre separately.

Either way, ask three questions before paying:

  • Is Green Tax included, and at USD 6 per night?
  • Is the airport boat shared, and does it match your flight time?
  • Which meals are included, and where are they served?

How much spending money do you need each day?

Holiday.com.mv suggests about USD 40 to 70 per person per day on a local island for meals out, day trips and small purchases. That is about RM165 to RM285 per day at RM4.09 per USD.

Carry some US dollars in small notes for cafes and tips. Card acceptance varies by guesthouse and shop, so ask your host before you arrive.

What moves the local-island budget?

The room rate and the number of excursions move the total most. A USD 180 room instead of USD 85 adds about RM600 per person over 3 nights.

Other factors to budget for:

  • Island distance: islands further from Male may need a private boat or domestic flight.
  • Excursions: whale shark, manta and diving trips cost more than a sandbank picnic.
  • Meals: guesthouse half board can be easier than eating out on small islands.
  • Fridays: some ferries and shops close around midday prayers.

Our page on meals on local islands and the guide to hidden expenses of a budget trip cover these lines in more detail.

Who does a local-island trip suit?

It suits budget travellers, groups of friends, solo travellers and divers who want more days in the water for the money. Muslim travellers often find it easy, with halal food widely available and no alcohol on the island.

It suits couples and families less well if they want a private beach, a pool or a water villa. In that case, a split stay between a resort and a guesthouse keeps costs moderate.

Questions travellers ask

Can I drink alcohol on a local-island trip?
Not on the inhabited island itself. Alcohol is sold only on resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities. Some local-island excursions visit a resort for a day pass or anchor a licensed boat offshore, at extra cost. For many Malaysian travellers this is not a concern, and it keeps the budget lower.
Is the public ferry a good way to save money?
Government ferries are very cheap, roughly USD 2 to 3 per person, but slow and infrequent. The Male to Maafushi ferry takes about 90 minutes to two hours and does not run on Fridays. It only works if your flight time matches the timetable, so confirm it before relying on it.
Are guesthouse prices per person or per room?
Guesthouse rates are usually per room per night, often with breakfast. Tax and Green Tax are then added on top. Packages sold in Malaysia are usually per person twin sharing, so convert both to the same basis before comparing.
Which local island is cheapest?
Maafushi has the most guesthouses and competition, so it often has the widest spread of budget rooms. Quieter islands such as Dhigurah or Fulidhoo can cost a little more to reach. The transfer is often what makes one island cheaper than another.
