Getting there from Male airport
- shared speedboat: about 1.5 to 2 hours, with a stop at DhangethiReported at about USD 50 to 65 per person one way in 2025 to 2026 traveller and guesthouse listings; confirm with your guesthouse
- domestic flight + boat: about 20 minutes flying to Maamigili, a short taxi, then about 20 minutes by speedboatReported from about USD 170 per adult one way (2025 traveller guide); confirm with your guesthouse
Dhigurah is reached by a long shared speedboat ride or a short flight plus boat. The boat is cheaper; the flight saves time and is gentler on bad sea days.
Both depend on fixed departure times, so your flight from Malaysia decides which works. For transfer types across the Maldives, see our airport transfers guide.
Which transfer should you take?
Take the shared speedboat if you land in the morning and want to keep costs down. Take the Maamigili flight if you value time, travel with young children or are prone to seasickness.
| Option | Time | Reported price basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared speedboat | About 1.5 to 2 hours, stops at Dhangethi | About USD 50 to 65 pp one way | Most travellers on a budget |
| Flight to Maamigili plus boat | About 20 min flight, 5 min taxi, about 20 min boat | From about USD 170 per adult one way | Short trips, families, poor sea days |
| Private charter | Similar to speedboat | Per boat, quote from guesthouse | Late arrivals, groups |
| Public ferry | About 6 to 7 hours with changes | Low fare, check locally | Very flexible travellers |
Prices and times come from 2025 to 2026 traveller and booking listings, not an operator timetable. Confirm with your guesthouse before you book flights.
Shared speedboat times
The reported pattern is two boats a day each way. Times shift, so treat these as planning times only.
| Direction | Reported times | Friday |
|---|---|---|
| Male or airport to Dhigurah | About 11:00 and 16:00 to 16:30 | Morning boat about 10:00 |
| Dhigurah to Male or airport | About 06:30 to 07:00 and 13:00 to 13:30 | Afternoon boat about 13:30 to 13:45 |
Your guesthouse books the seat and normally meets you at arrivals. Send your flight numbers as soon as you book.
Matching your KUL flight
- AirAsia, landing about 09:50: comfortable for the 11:00 boat, though the 10:00 Friday boat is tight.
- Malaysia Airlines, landing about 11:25: misses the morning boat, so take the afternoon boat or fly to Maamigili.
- Batik Air, landing about 21:55: stay a night in Hulhumale and travel next morning.
For the flight home, the 13:00 to 13:30 boat reaches the airport mid-afternoon, which suits an evening departure. If your flight home leaves before about 13:00, take the early boat or spend your last night near the airport.
Flying to Maamigili
Maamigili is the domestic airport island near Dhigurah. A 2025 guide described about 3 or 4 flights a day, a 20-minute flight, a short taxi to the harbour and about 20 minutes by speedboat.
The same guide reported fares from about USD 170 per adult, about USD 85 for children under 12 and free travel for under-2s, with the boat leg normally included. Check domestic baggage limits, since they can be lower than your international allowance.
Friday and weather planning
Friday boat times are earlier in the morning and slightly later in the afternoon. Public ferries do not run on Fridays, so read what to verify for Friday travel.
From about May to November the crossing can be rough, and boats can be delayed. On those dates, the Maamigili flight or an extra buffer night is a sensible choice.
Arrival day, step by step
A typical AirAsia arrival on a weekday looks like this. Times are approximate and depend on immigration queues and the sea.
- Land at Velana around 09:50 with your passport, return ticket, guesthouse confirmation and IMUGA Traveller Declaration ready.
- Clear immigration and customs, then meet your guesthouse or boat representative in the arrivals hall.
- Board the shared speedboat for the late-morning departure, around 11:00.
- Stop briefly at Dhangethi, then continue to Dhigurah.
- Arrive in the early afternoon, around 12:30 to 13:00, in time for lunch and a first swim.
If immigration is slow or your flight is late, you may miss the morning boat. Ask your guesthouse in advance what happens then: a wait for the afternoon boat, or a switch to a flight.
If you split your stay
Some travellers combine Dhigurah with another island or a resort. Moving between islands usually means returning toward Male or using a domestic flight, so allow half a day for each move.
Our page on planning inter-atoll transfers explains the options.
Before you travel: checklist
- Confirm both boat times and the fare per person, each way, with your guesthouse.
- Ask about child fares in writing.
- If landing after about 14:00, decide between the afternoon boat, a flight or a Hulhumale night.
- Keep passports and medicine in a waterproof bag on the boat.
- For the return, check the boat time before booking your flight home.
Once the transfer is planned, see what a holiday on Dhigurah costs to total the trip in ringgit.
