How to get to Guraidhoo from Male airport

You have picked Guraidhoo and need to know how to reach it on the day you land from Kuala Lumpur.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Take a shared speedboat. It takes about 35 to 45 minutes from Male, with about three departures a day each way, at a reported USD 25 to 30 per person one way in 2019 to 2023 guides (one booking site listed from about USD 43.50). The public ferry takes about 2 hours, costs a few dollars and runs Saturday to Thursday only. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals connect easily; confirm current times with your guesthouse.

The shared speedboat is the simple way to reach Guraidhoo. At about 35 to 45 minutes, it is one of the shorter local island transfers from Male.

This page covers the options, the reported times and fares, and which flights from Malaysia connect. For the island itself, see the Guraidhoo island guide, and for transfers in general, Maldives airport transfers explained.

These figures come from guides dated 2019 to 2023 and a booking site, not an official timetable. Confirm current fares and times with your guesthouse before you book flights.

Speedboat times reported

A 2019 guide listed shared speedboats leaving Male at about 12:30, 16:00 and 22:00, and leaving Guraidhoo at about 08:00, 14:30 and 17:30. A 2023 source confirmed three departures a day each way but did not list times.

Treat these times as a guide only. Operators change schedules, and your guesthouse will know which boat it uses.

Public ferry

The public ferry is reported to leave Guraidhoo at about 07:00 and Male at about 14:30 to 15:00, Saturday to Thursday. The 2023 fare was MVR 22 per person.

It leaves from Male city, not the airport, so you first cross from the airport island to Male. Allow at least an hour for that, with luggage. One route calls at Gulhi and Maafushi on the way.

Which flights from Malaysia connect?

Three airlines fly nonstop from KUL to Male in about 4h15 to 4h25.

KUL flightLands in Male (approx.)Same-day Guraidhoo?
AirAsia09:50Yes, likely the midday boat
Malaysia Airlines11:25Yes, midday or afternoon boat
Batik Air21:55Only if a late boat runs; otherwise Hulhumale

The 2019 guide reported a late evening boat from Male, which would suit Batik Air arrivals. Confirm it still runs before relying on it.

The return trip

Take a morning boat on your departure day. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines leave Male around midday to early afternoon, so an 08:00 boat gives a comfortable buffer.

If you fly out on a Friday or very early, the 2019 guide suggests leaving Guraidhoo the day before. Check the Friday boat times.

Private speedboat for groups and late arrivals

A private speedboat makes sense for groups, families with lots of luggage or anyone landing after the last shared boat. A 2019 guide quoted USD 250 per boat one way for up to 10 people, about 35 minutes. That price is old, so ask for a current quote.

Split across a group of six, even a higher current price can come close to shared fares per person. Ask the guesthouse to arrange it so the boat meets you at the airport jetty.

Moving on from Guraidhoo

Guraidhoo sits close to Maafushi and other South Male islands, so it works in a split stay. One public ferry route reportedly calls at Gulhi and Maafushi, and guesthouses can arrange private boats between islands.

A common plan is a few nights on Guraidhoo for quiet, then a resort or a busier island for the rest of the trip. Each move adds a boat fare, so keep transfers to one or two.

How the transfer fits a short trip

On a 4D3N trip from Kuala Lumpur, a morning arrival and the midday boat give you most of day one on the island. The return morning boat then fits a midday flight home.

That makes Guraidhoo one of the easier local islands for a short break. Islands further away, such as those reached by domestic flight, lose more of the first and last days.

Checklist before you book

  • Confirm the Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, not Thaa Atoll.
  • Send your flight numbers to the guesthouse.
  • Ask where the boat leaves from and the fare per person.
  • Check Friday and public holiday times.
  • Keep a Hulhumale fallback for late or delayed arrivals.

Who this transfer suits

The short speedboat suits families, older travellers and first-timers who want little travel after the flight. Budget travellers with time can use the ferry, saving money at the cost of half a day.

If you want a resort-style arrival by seaplane, a local island is the wrong choice. Compare local islands and resorts in Kaafu Atoll: local island versus resort.

Questions travellers ask

Does the speedboat leave from the airport or Male city?
Shared speedboats to South Male islands usually collect guests at the airport jetty, but some leave from Male city. Ask your guesthouse exactly where to meet and who will greet you. Public ferries leave from Male, so you would first cross from the airport to the city.
Is the speedboat crossing rough?
The trip stays mostly within the atoll and is short, so it is usually manageable. It can be bumpy in the southwest monsoon, about May to November. Sit near the back, keep valuables in a dry bag and take motion sickness tablets if you need them.
Can I reach Guraidhoo on a Friday?
There is no public ferry on Fridays. Shared speedboats were reported to run daily, but Friday times can differ around midday prayers. Confirm the Friday schedule with your guesthouse before you book flights for that day.
How much luggage can I take?
We found no published luggage limit for the shared speedboats. A standard suitcase and a day bag per person is normal. Mention dive or surf gear when you book, and expect soft bags to be easier on the island's sandy lanes.
