How to get to Maafushi from Male airport

You have a flight into Velana and need to know which boat gets you to Maafushi, and when.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Take the shared airport speedboat. It is listed at USD 25 per person one way, takes about 30 to 35 minutes and must be booked in advance through your guesthouse or the operator. The public ferry from Male is far cheaper but takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours, leaves from Male city rather than the airport and does not run on Fridays. A private charter is the fallback for late arrivals.

Getting there from Male airport

  • shared speedboat: about 30 to 35 minutesUSD 25 per person one way, advance booking required (Maafushi.com, checked 2026-10-12)
  • public ferry: about 90 minutes to 2 hours

Most Malaysians reach Maafushi by shared speedboat straight from the airport jetty. It is quick, fixed-price and arranged by your guesthouse.

The public ferry and private charters are the alternatives, each with a clear use case. For how transfers work across the Maldives, see our guide to airport transfers.

Which transfer should you take?

For almost every Malaysian traveller, the answer is the shared speedboat. It saves 1 to 1.5 hours each way and leaves from the airport itself.

The public ferry is cheap but means a separate trip from the airport into Male city. Our page on choosing a speedboat or public ferry covers the trade-offs in general.

How the shared speedboat works

The operator lists the shared speedboat at USD 25 per person one way and states that advance booking is required. The journey is about 30 to 35 minutes in normal sea conditions.

Your guesthouse books the seat once you send your flight number. A representative usually meets you after customs, and the boat leaves from the jetty in front of the terminal.

The operator publishes its timetable only as an image, so this page does not quote departure times. Ask your guesthouse for the boat that matches your flight, and the time of the return boat for your flight home.

Matching your KUL flight to the boat

All three nonstop flights from KUL land in the day or evening, Maldives time. The earlier you land, the more options you have.

  1. AirAsia, landing about 09:50: easiest, with several boats in the late morning.
  2. Malaysia Airlines, landing about 11:25: also easy, usually on the island by mid-afternoon.
  3. Batik Air, landing about 21:55: confirm a late shared boat runs, or budget for a private charter or a night in Hulhumale.

On the way home, aim to be at the airport about three hours before departure. With a short boat ride, a midday boat usually suits the Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia return flights.

The public ferry and Friday rule

The public ferry runs from the Villingili ferry terminal in Male city, takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours and does not run on Fridays. You first need to get from the airport across to Male city, usually by taxi.

Ferry timetables change and are not reliably published online, so this page does not quote times or fares. Confirm with your guesthouse or at the terminal, and read how Friday affects ferry plans.

Private charter for late flights and groups

A private speedboat is priced per boat, not per person. It can make sense for a group of six or more, or when your flight lands after the last shared boat.

Ask your guesthouse for a written per-boat quote, including the night surcharge if any. Compare it with one night in Hulhumale plus a morning shared boat.

Weather and sea conditions

From about May to November, the southwest monsoon can bring rougher seas and short delays. The boat ride is short, but people prone to seasickness should take medication before boarding.

Keep passports, medicine and valuables in a small waterproof bag on your lap. Large bags go at the back or on the roof.

Arrival day, step by step

Here is how a typical morning arrival on AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines plays out. Times are approximate and depend on queues at immigration.

  1. Land at Velana and walk to immigration with your passport, return ticket, guesthouse confirmation and IMUGA Traveller Declaration.
  2. Collect your bags and clear customs. Remember that alcohol and pork cannot be brought into the Maldives.
  3. Look for your guesthouse or boat representative in the arrivals hall, usually holding a sign with your name.
  4. Walk to the jetty outside the terminal and board the shared speedboat with other guests.
  5. Arrive on Maafushi about 30 to 35 minutes later, where your guesthouse usually meets the boat.

On the way home, the same route runs in reverse. Your guesthouse confirms the boat time the evening before, and staff help carry bags to the harbour.

Families, older travellers and heavy bags

Boarding a speedboat means stepping down from a jetty onto a moving deck. Crew help passengers on and off, but tell your guesthouse in advance if anyone in your group needs extra assistance.

Strollers fold and travel with the luggage. Infants sit on a parent's lap, so ask for an infant life jacket when you book.

Before you travel: checklist

  • Send your arrival and departure flight numbers to your guesthouse.
  • Get the boat price per person, each way, and the child fare in writing.
  • Ask who meets you and where, and save a WhatsApp number.
  • If landing after about 20:00, confirm the late option before booking flights.
  • If travelling on a Friday, do not plan around the public ferry.

Once the transfer is sorted, see what a holiday on Maafushi costs to put the full trip in ringgit.

Questions travellers ask

Can I just buy a speedboat ticket when I land?
The Maafushi.com transfer page says advance booking is required for the shared speedboat. Book through your guesthouse when you confirm your room and send your flight number. The guesthouse or boat operator usually meets you in the arrivals hall, and the boat leaves from the jetty right outside the terminal.
Do children pay the full speedboat fare?
Policies differ by operator and are not published clearly. Some charge full fare above a set age and discount or waive it for infants. Ask your guesthouse for the child fare in writing, along with the per-person price for the return leg.
What if my flight is delayed and I miss the boat?
Tell your guesthouse as soon as you know. The options are a later shared boat if one runs, a private charter at a higher price, or a night in Hulhumale and a morning boat. Travel insurance that covers missed connections helps with the extra cost.
How much luggage can I take on the speedboat?
Shared speedboats generally take normal suitcases, but space is limited and bags may get splashed. A soft bag or a rain cover helps. Check any limit with the operator if you carry dive gear, a pram or more than one large case per person.
