What does a holiday on Maafushi cost?

Maafushi is one of the cheapest ways to see the Maldives from Malaysia, but the final bill depends on taxes that many listings leave out. This page builds the cost line by line so you can check every number.

What does 3 nights on Maafushi cost for two?

Room, taxes, Green Tax and return speedboats come to about USD 368 to USD 831 for a couple, or RM 1,505 to RM 3,399. That is before flights, meals beyond breakfast and excursions.

The room band is a market bracket for local-island doubles (holiday.com.mv, checked 11 Oct 2026), not a Maafushi rate card. The speedboat fare is from Maafushi.com, checked 12 Oct 2026.

How the taxes are worked out

Service charge of 10% is added to the room first, then 17% Tourism GST is charged on that total. So 1.10 x 1.17 = 1.287, which adds about 28.7% to a pre-tax room rate.

Green Tax is separate: USD 6 per guest per night at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer, under-2s exempt. Our Green Tax explainer covers the rules in full.

Flights from Malaysia

The cheapest KUL to Male return seen on Traveloka on 11 Oct 2026 was RM 1,155 per person in economy, possibly without checked bags. Fares move daily, so check your own dates.

Adding that fare to the mid-room column gives about RM 1,225 + RM 1,155 = RM 2,380 per person before meals and excursions.

Meals and excursions

Breakfast is usually included. Most guesthouses also sell half board or full board, and that per-person price is the easiest way to fix your food budget.

Package prices from Malaysian agencies

Agencies sell 4D3N Maafushi land packages, usually without flights. Read the basis before comparing.

Do-it-yourself versus a package: a worked comparison

To compare fairly, price the same items on both sides. Here is the mid-room case for one person sharing with a partner, against the HolidayGoGoGo Arena Beach package.

1. Do-it-yourself room, taxes, Green Tax and speedboat: about RM 1,225 per person (mid column above).
2. Add three excursions at the lower end of the 2026 guide ranges, for example two snorkel or sandbank trips at USD 25 and a dolphin cruise at USD 20: USD 70, or about RM 286.
3. Add lunches and dinners at your guesthouse's half board or full board rate, which you need to ask for.
4. Compare the total with RM 2,319 per person for the package, which already includes most meals, four trips and all taxes.

If your step 3 figure is above about RM 800 per person for the stay, the package works out cheaper. If you prefer to eat out cheaply or skip excursions, the do-it-yourself route usually wins.

Remember that the package price applies to travel up to 31 Oct 2026 only. For later dates, ask for the new rate before you compare.

What moves the number most

• Room choice: the gap between a USD 60 and a USD 180 room is about RM 1,900 for two over 3 nights.
• Excursions: two or three paid trips each can add more than the room.
• Season: December to April and Malaysian school holidays usually cost more.
• Flight time: a late arrival can add a private boat or a Hulhumale night.
