How to get to Dhangethi from Male airport

You land at Velana and need to reach Dhangethi in South Ari without losing a day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Most travellers take the shared speedboat, about 1.5 to 2 hours, reported to leave Male and the airport around 10:45 and 16:00 (about 09:45 and 15:00 on Fridays). Reported fares range widely, from about USD 25 to 85 per person one way, so get a written price from your guesthouse. A domestic flight to Maamigili plus a short boat is faster in the air but reported at about USD 220 per person; the public ferry takes 6 to 8 hours with a change.

Dhangethi has no airport, so every trip ends with a boat. The question is which boat, and whether your flight from Malaysia lands in time for it.

This page compares the routes. For the island itself, read the Dhangethi island guide, and for the wider picture see getting to South Ari from Male airport.

The short answer

Take the shared speedboat, booked through your guesthouse, and fly AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines from KUL so you land before the afternoon departure.

Dhangethi is about 88 km south-west of Male. Reported crossing times run from about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea state and stops.

Your options compared

Times and fares below come from a 2026 island guide and booking listings, checked 12 Oct 2026. Fares are reported ranges, not quotes.

The same 2026 guide also mentions a seaplane plus speedboat route at about USD 270 per person. Few guesthouse guests use it, and seaplanes fly in daylight only.

Shared speedboat schedule

The reported pattern is two boats a day each way. Confirm with your guesthouse, because operators change times with the season.

The 2026 guide names Endheri Express as one operator. There is no public ticket office at the airport, so the guesthouse reserves your seat and a representative usually meets you in the arrivals hall.

Which flight from Malaysia connects?

Maldives is 3 hours behind Malaysia. All three nonstop KUL flights take about 4h15 to 4h25.

FlightLands at VelanaConnection
AirAsiaAbout 09:50Usually the 10:45 boat if immigration is quick, otherwise 16:00
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25The 16:00 boat (15:00 on Fridays)
Batik AirAbout 21:55Night in Hulhumale, morning boat next day

Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching travellers connect via KUL. Leave at least 90 minutes between landing and a shared boat.

Getting home

Reported return boats leave Dhangethi at about 07:00 and 14:45. The early boat suits AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines midday departures; check your flight time before you pick.

If your flight home leaves late at night, take the afternoon boat. With an early morning flight, travel back the day before and sleep in Hulhumale.

Public ferry, for flexible travellers

A 2026 guide reports a ferry from Male to Mahibadhoo on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday mornings, then a second ferry to Dhangethi. The full trip takes 6 to 8 hours.

Fares are a few US dollars, but timetables could not be confirmed from the operator's own site. Public ferries do not run on Fridays. Treat this as an adventure, not a plan for a short holiday.

Flying via Maamigili

The domestic flight lands at Maamigili, on the south side of South Ari, in about 20 to 30 minutes from Velana. A speedboat then takes about 20 to 30 minutes to Dhangethi, according to a 2026 island guide.

This route suits travellers who get seasick or who land after the last shared boat but before the last domestic flight. It costs much more, reported at about USD 220 per person one way, and domestic flights have their own baggage limits. Ask your guesthouse to coordinate the boat pickup at Maamigili before you buy the ticket.

Travelling with children, seniors or dive gear

Children and older travellers handle the shared boat best on calm mornings. Choose the morning departure in the wetter months if your flight allows, and ask the crew for seats near the back.

Divers carrying their own equipment should tell the guesthouse in advance. Shared boats have limited space, and some operators may charge for extra bags. Pack medicines, passports and phones in a dry bag you keep on your lap.

Transfer checklist before you pay

  • Send the guesthouse your flight number and arrival time.
  • Get the shared boat fare per adult, per child and for infants in writing.
  • Ask about luggage limits, especially dive gear.
  • Confirm the meeting point at Velana arrivals and a WhatsApp contact.
  • Agree the return boat time against your flight home.
  • Budget transfers in your trip cost calculator at two return seats per couple.

When the transfer suggests a different island

If you only have three nights or can only fly Batik Air, a Kaafu island such as Maafushi saves you most of a day. Dhangethi pays off when you have four or more nights and a morning arrival.

Questions travellers ask

Can I reach Dhangethi on the Batik Air evening flight?
Not the same night by shared boat, since the last reported departure is mid-afternoon. Stay a night in Hulhumale, which is close to the airport, and take the morning boat at about 10:45. A private speedboat can run late, but it is priced per boat and costs far more than two shared seats.
Is the speedboat to Dhigurah the same as the one to Dhangethi?
Often yes. Shared boats bound for Dhigurah are reported to stop at Dhangethi on the way, and the islands are a short ride apart. Tell your guesthouse your flight number so it reserves the seat and confirms the drop-off at Dhangethi harbour.
Do children pay full fare on the speedboat?
Child fares vary by operator and are not published consistently. Some South Ari operators charge children over about 3 the adult fare. Ask your guesthouse for the child and infant price in writing when you book, together with the luggage allowance per person.
Is the crossing rough?
It is an open-water crossing between atolls. From about May to November the southwest monsoon can make it choppy, and some departures may be delayed. Take seasickness medication 30 minutes before boarding, sit near the back and keep passports and medicines in a waterproof bag.
