How to get to Mahibadhoo from Male airport

You land at Velana and need to reach Mahibadhoo in South Ari the same day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Most travellers take a shared speedboat, reported at about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and USD 45 to 65 per person one way, with Male departures around 10:30 and 16:00. The faster option is a 20 to 30 minute domestic flight to Maamigili plus about 30 minutes by boat. A public ferry takes about 5 hours and runs only on some days. An AirAsia morning arrival from KUL connects best.

Mahibadhoo, the capital of South Ari, is reached by shared speedboat, by a short flight to Maamigili and a boat, or by slow public ferry. Your flight from Malaysia decides which one works.

For an overview of the island itself, read our Mahibadhoo island guide. For transfer types across the country, see airport transfers explained.

Which transfer should you take?

Take the shared speedboat if you land in the morning and want to keep costs down. Take the Maamigili flight if you land around midday, travel with young children or get seasick easily.

Shared speedboat times

The reported pattern is two boats a day each way. Treat these as planning times only.

DirectionReported times
Male or airport to MahibadhooAbout 10:30 and 16:00
Mahibadhoo to Male or airportAbout 06:00 (Sunday) or 07:00 (other days), and 13:00

Several shared boats in South Ari stop at more than one island, which is why journey times vary. Friday services are reduced or absent on many routes, so read what to verify for Friday travel.

Matching your KUL flight

  1. AirAsia, landing about 09:50: workable for the 10:30 boat if immigration is quick, otherwise the 16:00 boat.
  2. Malaysia Airlines, landing about 11:25: take the 16:00 boat, or the Maamigili flight listed around 13:00 to 13:30.
  3. Batik Air, landing about 21:55: spend the night in Hulhumale and travel the next morning. Compare options in Hulhumale versus Male for an airport night.

For the flight home, the 13:00 boat reaches the airport mid-afternoon, which suits an evening departure such as the Batik Air flight back to KUL. For a morning flight home, spend your last night near the airport.

The Maamigili flight option

Domestic flights from Male to Villa International Airport Maamigili take about 20 to 30 minutes. Mid-2026 schedule data lists Male departures around 13:00 to 13:30 and 17:00, and return flights from Maamigili around 07:00, 10:35 and 16:00.

From Maamigili, a speedboat to Mahibadhoo takes about 30 minutes. Ask your guesthouse to quote the flight and boat together, per person, each way, with the domestic baggage allowance. Schedules change, so confirm on booking.

Arrival day, step by step

A typical Malaysia Airlines arrival looks like this. Times are approximate.

  1. Land at Velana around 11:25 with your passport, return ticket, guesthouse confirmation and IMUGA Traveller Declaration.
  2. Clear immigration and meet the guesthouse or boat representative in arrivals.
  3. Have lunch at the airport and wait for the afternoon boat.
  4. Board around 16:00 and reach Mahibadhoo around 17:30 to 18:30, depending on stops and sea.

If you would rather not wait four hours, ask about the early-afternoon Maamigili flight instead.

Weather and safety

From about May to November the crossing can be rough, and boats can be delayed or cancelled. On those dates, keep a buffer night before your flight home, or choose the flight option.

Before you travel: checklist

  • Confirm both boat times and the fare per person, each way, in writing.
  • Ask whether advance payment carries a bank charge.
  • Ask about child fares.
  • If landing after about 14:00, decide between the 16:00 boat, a flight or a Hulhumale night.
  • Check the return boat time before booking your flight home.

Travelling with children or older parents

The flight-plus-boat route is gentler for young children and older travellers. It cuts the open-water time from up to two and a half hours to about 30 minutes.

If you take the speedboat, ask the guesthouse to reserve seats near the back, where the ride is smoother. Pack water, snacks and seasickness medicine in a small bag you can reach on board.

Children under 2 do not pay Green Tax, but boat and flight child fares vary by operator. Ask for child prices in writing before you pay a deposit.

Combining Mahibadhoo with another island

Some travellers pair Mahibadhoo with Dhigurah or a South Ari resort. Shared boats in South Ari can link nearby islands, but timings depend on the operator, so ask both guesthouses or the resort how the move works.

Allow half a day for any island change. Our South Ari transfer options guide explains the wider choices.

Questions travellers ask

Can I reach Mahibadhoo on the Batik Air evening flight?
Not by shared speedboat, since the last reported boat leaves Male around 16:00 and domestic flights do not reach Maamigili late at night. Book a night in Hulhumale near the airport and take the morning boat the next day. A private speedboat is possible but is priced per boat and costs far more.
Does the guesthouse arrange the speedboat?
Usually yes. Guesthouses book your seat, send a representative to meet you at arrivals and collect payment, sometimes in advance. One 2026 listing charged USD 45 per person each way plus a bank charge for advance payment. Ask whether the price is per person or per boat.
Is the speedboat ride rough?
It is an open-water crossing of up to two and a half hours. From about May to November the southwest monsoon can make it choppy and cause delays. Take seasickness tablets before boarding, sit near the back, and keep passports and medicine in a waterproof bag.
Is the public ferry worth it?
Only for very flexible travellers. It is reported at about 5 hours and a few US dollars, running on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, with no Friday service. Timetables could not be confirmed from the operator, so treat it as a backup and check locally.
