Which routes reach South Ari?

There are three: seaplane, domestic flight plus speedboat via Maamigili, and shared speedboat for local islands. Which one you use depends mostly on where you stay and what time you land.

What each route costs in ringgit

Which KLIA flights connect the same day?

Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and Trans Maldivian advises landing by about 15:30 to connect. If you arrive on Batik Air, book a night in Hulhumale and transfer the next morning.

The Maamigili domestic flight in practice

Maamigili Airport sits on a local island facing the whale shark reef. Travel guides list FlyMe, Maldivian and Manta Air on the route, with flights of about 20 to 30 minutes.

The shared speedboat in practice

The shared speedboat is how most guesthouse guests reach Dhigurah and Dhangethi. Listings report Male departures around 11:00 and 16:00, with earlier and fewer boats on Fridays, and boats stop at Dhangethi on the way to Dhigurah.

Your guesthouse usually books the seat and tells you where to meet at the airport jetty. Give them your flight number when you book the room, and confirm the boat time again two days before you fly.

The crossing runs across open water between Kaafu and Ari. On a calm day it is a pleasant ride, but in the southwest monsoon it can be bumpy for two hours. Take seasickness tablets before boarding if you are prone to it, and keep passports, phones and medication in a small dry bag on your lap.

Questions to ask before you book

Send these to your resort or guesthouse in writing before paying a deposit:

1. Which transfer do you use for my arrival time, and is it included in my rate?
2. What is the price per adult and per child, and is tax included?
3. If my KLIA flight is delayed past the cut-off, what happens and who pays for the night in Male?
4. What is the baggage allowance, and is there a charge for extra kilos?
5. For the return, what time must I leave the island to make my flight home?

Clear answers to these five questions remove most of the stress from arrival day.

Limitations to plan around

• Daylight seaplanes: a delayed KLIA flight can push you past the cut-off; ask the resort what happens then.
• Weather on the speedboat: the open crossing to South Ari can be rough in the southwest monsoon, May to November.
• Fixed boat times: shared speedboats leave at set times, so you may wait at the airport for a few hours.
• Baggage: seaplane allowance is 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage on Trans Maldivian.

Who each route suits

Honeymooners and older travellers usually prefer the seaplane or flight, since both are short and smooth. Families with young children should avoid the 2-hour speedboat on rough days if a flight is offered.
