- Alcohol is not available on the island
Getting there from Male airport
- domestic flight: about 20 to 30 minutes, Male to Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM)Reported from about USD 105 one way (2026 island guide); other 2025 guides report about USD 170 including a boat onward. Confirm with the airline or guesthouse
- shared speedboat: about 1.5 to 2 hoursReported at about USD 60 to 70 per person one way (2025 to 2026); confirm with your guesthouse
Maamigili has its own domestic airport, so it is one of the few local islands you can reach by plane in under half an hour. The shared speedboat is cheaper but takes much longer.
For the island itself, read our Maamigili island guide. For transfer types across the country, see airport transfers explained.
Flight or speedboat?
Fly if your time is short, you travel with young children or you get seasick. Take the speedboat if you land in the morning and want to save money.
| Option | Time | Reported price basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic flight | About 20 to 30 min | About USD 105 to 170 one way, reports vary | Short trips, families, rough seas |
| Shared speedboat | About 1.5 to 2 hours | About USD 60 to 70 pp one way | Budget travellers with a morning arrival |
| Private speedboat | About 2 hours | Per boat, quote from guesthouse | Groups, late arrivals before dark |
| Public ferry | About 6 to 7 hours | Low fare, check locally | Very flexible travellers |
Prices come from 2025 to 2026 traveller and island-guide listings, not an airline fare table. Confirm with your guesthouse before you book flights.
Domestic flight times
The route is flown by Villa Air (trading as Flyme) to Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM). Mid-2026 schedule data shows these planning times:
| Direction | Listed times (Maldives time) |
|---|---|
| Male to Maamigili | About 13:00 to 13:30, and about 17:00 |
| Maamigili to Male | About 06:30 to 07:00, about 10:35 and about 16:00 |
Schedule sources disagree by up to 30 minutes, and timetables change. The airline website could not be reached securely when we checked, so book through your guesthouse or a trusted agent and confirm times in writing.
Shared speedboat times
Island guides report two shared boats a day, around 11:00 and 16:00 from the airport, often with no Friday service. Operators named include Atoll Transfer and My Express Maamigili.
Read what to verify for Friday travel if your dates include a Friday.
Matching your KUL flight
- AirAsia, landing about 09:50: take the 11:00 boat, or wait for the early-afternoon flight.
- Malaysia Airlines, landing about 11:25: the 13:00 to 13:30 flight is a comfortable connection, or take the 16:00 boat.
- Batik Air, landing about 21:55: spend a night in Hulhumale; see Hulhumale versus Male for an airport night.
Going home, the 16:00 flight from Maamigili suits the Batik Air evening departure to KUL. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines leave Male around midday, so the early-morning Maamigili flight or a last night near the airport is safer.
Allow buffer time
Leave at least three hours between landing in Male and your international departure. Domestic flights can be delayed by weather, and missing a connection is costly.
On the way in, allow at least 90 minutes after your KUL flight lands before a domestic departure, to clear immigration and collect bags.
Arrival day, step by step
A typical Malaysia Airlines arrival looks like this. Times are approximate.
- Land at Velana around 11:25 with your passport, return ticket, guesthouse confirmation and IMUGA Traveller Declaration.
- Clear immigration, collect bags and meet the guesthouse representative, who directs you to the domestic terminal.
- Fly to Maamigili around 13:00 to 13:30, landing about 30 minutes later.
- Take a short ride to your guesthouse and be on the beach by mid-afternoon.
Before you travel: checklist
- Get the flight price per person, each way, and the baggage allowance in writing.
- Ask whether the transfer from the airport to your guesthouse is included.
- Check child and infant fares.
- Match the return flight or boat to your KUL departure with a buffer.
- Keep passports and medicine in your hand luggage.
Travelling with children or older parents
The flight is the easier choice for young children, older parents and anyone with mobility needs. It avoids a long open-water crossing and the climb in and out of a moving boat.
Small turboprop aircraft use steps rather than air bridges, so tell your guesthouse in advance if someone needs help boarding. Children under 2 do not pay Green Tax, but child airfares vary, so ask for them in writing.
Moving on to Dhigurah or a resort
Maamigili is also the gateway for Dhigurah and several South Ari resorts. Dhigurah is about 20 minutes away by speedboat, and many guesthouses meet guests at the Maamigili airport.
If you split your stay between Maamigili and another island, ask both properties who arranges the boat between them and what it costs. Allow half a day for the move. See our South Ari transfer options guide for the wider picture.
