How to get to Thoddoo from Male airport

You have a flight to Male and need to know which boat or seaplane gets you to Thoddoo the same day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Most travellers reach Thoddoo by shared speedboat from Velana airport in about 1 to 1.5 hours, with departures reported around 10:00 and 16:00, at about USD 35 to 45 per person one way through guesthouses (booking sites show higher). Since 12 February 2026, Maldivian also flies a seaplane on Thursdays and Saturdays, at MVR 799 one way at launch. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals connect the same day; Batik Air's evening arrival needs a night in Hulhumale or a private boat.

This page owns the transfer question. For what the island is like, read the Thoddoo island guide; for local islands in general, see the local islands beginner guide.

Which ways can you reach Thoddoo?

There are four realistic routes. The shared speedboat is the one most guesthouses arrange.

Speedboat, private boat and ferry figures are from aMaldives (island guide updated April 2026, ferry guide updated May 2026). Seaplane details are from Maldivian's February 2026 launch, reported by Edition.mv and the President's Office. Confirm all prices with your guesthouse.

The shared speedboat in practice

Guesthouses book you onto a scheduled boat run by local operators such as Nasru Speed and Ramzu Express. Staff usually meet you in the arrivals hall and walk you to the jetty.

Booking sites list the same route at about USD 62 to 78 per person one way, while aMaldives reports USD 35 to 45 when booked through a guesthouse. Ferryscanner shows Nasru Speed crossings of about 55 minutes to 1 hour, but it lists fewer weekly sailings than guesthouses describe, so treat its frequency with caution.

Return boats leave Thoddoo around 07:00 and reach the airport mid-morning.

The Thoddoo seaplane

Maldivian, the state airline, started scheduled seaplane flights to Thoddoo on 12 February 2026. Flights run on Thursdays and Saturdays, at a special one-way fare of MVR 799 announced at launch.

Thoddoo has its own seaplane platform, and check-in for the return is at the Island Council office. Departure times were not published in news reports, so ask Maldivian or your guesthouse. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, as explained in our page on whether bad weather affects seaplanes.

Matching your KUL flight to a transfer

Flight from KULLands at Male (local time)Same-day transfer
AirAsiaAbout 09:50Yes, 10:00 boat is tight; 16:00 boat is safe
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25Yes, afternoon boat
Batik AirAbout 21:55No: overnight in Hulhumale or private boat

Times are the October 2026 sample schedules in our facts file. Immigration and bags can take an hour, so a 09:50 landing may miss a 10:00 boat. Ask your guesthouse whether the boat waits for that flight.

If you arrive late, read whether to stay in Male or Hulhumale before an island transfer.

A timeline for the common case

  1. 08:35: AirAsia leaves KUL.
  2. 09:50: land at Velana, clear immigration, collect bags.
  3. 10:30 to 15:30: lunch and wait at the airport or Hulhumale if you missed the morning boat.
  4. 16:00: shared speedboat to Thoddoo.
  5. About 17:15: arrive, check in, sunset on the beach.

For the return, the 07:00 boat suits Malaysia Airlines or AirAsia departures from about midday onwards. Confirm your flight time before you book the last night.

Luggage, seasickness and safety

Speedboats in North Ari cross open water, so the ride can be bumpy in the southwest monsoon, about May to November. Sit near the back, take seasickness tablets beforehand and keep valuables in a dry bag.

Keep checked bags to a size two people can lift onto a boat. If you take the seaplane, check Maldivian's baggage allowance when you book.

If a boat is cancelled or delayed

Boats in the Maldives sometimes run late or are cancelled in rough weather. Plan with that in mind.

Keep your guesthouse's WhatsApp number handy and message them when you land. If the boat is cancelled, they usually rebook you on the next one or help with a night in Hulhumale.

On the way home, avoid same-day connections to an early flight. Check that your travel insurance covers missed connections caused by transfer delays.

Who each route suits

Choose the shared speedboat for most trips, especially couples and friends on a budget. Choose the seaplane on a Thursday or Saturday if you travel with older parents or young children and want a shorter ride.

Choose a private boat for a group of six or more, where the per-person cost narrows. Choose the ferry only if time matters less than money, and keep a buffer day. The Thoddoo cost guide shows how each option changes the budget.

Questions travellers ask

Why do booking sites show higher speedboat prices than guesthouses?
Booking sites list Thoddoo transfers at about USD 62 to 78 per person one way, while a 2026 island guide reports about USD 35 to 45 when booked through a guesthouse. The difference is usually the platform's margin. Ask your guesthouse to book the boat and confirm the price in writing before you travel.
Can I catch the Thoddoo seaplane straight from my KUL flight?
Possibly, on a Thursday or Saturday with a morning arrival, but news reports did not publish departure times. Ask your guesthouse or Maldivian for the current time and check-in rule. Remember seaplanes fly only in daylight, and bad weather can delay them.
What if my flight home is in the morning?
The Thoddoo boat reaches the airport in the morning, but leaving the same day as an early flight is risky. If your KUL flight leaves before about midday, spend your last night in Hulhumale. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines return flights usually leave Male around midday or later; check your ticket.
Is the public ferry a realistic option?
Only for flexible, budget travellers. It takes about 4 to 5 hours, runs a few days a week with no Friday service, and sources disagree on which days. It costs a few US dollars. Confirm the current days with your guesthouse or MTCC before planning around it.
