How to get to Ukulhas from Male airport

You have a flight to Male and need to know which boat gets you to Ukulhas the same day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Take the shared speedboat from Velana airport, about 1 to 1.5 hours to Ukulhas, at about USD 50 to 55 per person one way on October 2026 listings. A 2026 tour operator lists Male departures at 10:30 and 16:00 (09:30 and 16:30 on Fridays) and returns from Ukulhas at 06:30 and 12:30 (07:00 and 13:30 on Fridays). AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals connect the same day; Batik Air's evening arrival does not.

Ukulhas is easy to reach on a morning arrival. Two shared speedboats a day connect it with the airport, and the timetable shifts slightly on Fridays.

This page owns the transfer question. For what the island is like, read the Ukulhas island guide; for local islands in general, see the local islands beginner guide.

Which ways can you reach Ukulhas?

There are four routes, and the shared speedboat is the one most travellers use.

Sources: Kilroy (2026 transfer times), 12Go (fares checked October 2026), aMaldives (private boat and ferry estimates, 2026) and Wikivoyage (Rasdhoo link). Sources differ on journey time, from about 50 minutes to nearly 2 hours, mainly because of stops and sea conditions.

The speedboat timetable

A 2026 tour operator page gives these shared speedboat times. Confirm them with your guesthouse before you book flights.

Ukulhas to Male06:30 and 12:3007:00 and 13:30

12Go listings in October 2026 showed Atoll Transfer at about USD 55 and Coral Speed at about USD 50 per person one way. Ignore occasional very high "taxi" prices on booking sites, which look like listing errors.

Matching your KUL flight to a boat

Flight from KULLands at Male (local time)Ukulhas boat
AirAsiaAbout 09:5010:30 if bags are quick; 16:00 is safe
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:2516:00 (16:30 on Fridays)
Batik AirAbout 21:55None: overnight in Hulhumale

These are the October 2026 sample schedules in our facts file. If you land on AirAsia, ask your guesthouse whether the 10:30 boat waits for that flight.

Late arrivals should read whether to stay in Male or Hulhumale before an island transfer.

The public ferry and why many skip it

The government ferry costs only a few dollars but takes about 4 hours, often stopping at Rasdhoo. aMaldives lists departures from Hulhumale on Mondays and Thursdays at 09:00 and returns on Sundays and Wednesdays, while its general ferry guide says boats leave from the Villingili terminal in Male.

That disagreement is a reason to confirm with your guesthouse or MTCC before relying on it. One tour operator moved all its Ukulhas guests to speedboats from 1 November 2026.

A timeline for the common case

  1. 10:10: Malaysia Airlines leaves KUL.
  2. 11:25: land at Velana, clear immigration and collect bags.
  3. 12:30 to 15:30: lunch at the airport or a short trip to Hulhumale.
  4. 16:00: shared speedboat to Ukulhas.
  5. About 17:15 to 17:30: arrive in time for sunset on the beach.

For the return, the 06:30 boat suits a Malaysia Airlines or AirAsia departure from about midday. Check your ticket, as times change by season.

If a boat is late or cancelled

Rough weather can delay or cancel boats, especially in the southwest monsoon, about May to November. Message your guesthouse when you land so they know you are on the way.

If the last boat is cancelled, the guesthouse can usually help with a night in Hulhumale and a seat the next morning. Travel insurance that covers transfer delays is worth having.

Combining Ukulhas with Rasdhoo or a resort

Ukulhas and Rasdhoo sit close together in North Ari, so some travellers split their nights between them. Wikivoyage puts the speedboat hop at about 20 minutes, and public boats also link the two on most days except Friday.

Seaplane resorts in North Ari and Rasdhoo Atoll can be added at the end of a trip. Ask the resort to collect you from Ukulhas by boat, or return to Male and connect there, depending on the resort.

Our page on moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas covers the options.

Luggage and comfort on the boat

Bags are loaded by hand, so pack in a size you can lift. Keep passports, phones and medicine in a small dry bag.

The back of the boat is usually smoother. Take seasickness tablets before departure if you are prone to it.

Who each route suits

The shared speedboat suits nearly everyone. A private boat makes sense for a group of six or more, or for an evening arrival when you want to skip a Hulhumale night.

The ferry suits flexible travellers with time to spare. The Ukulhas cost guide shows how the transfer fits into the total budget.

Questions travellers ask

Who runs the Ukulhas speedboats?
Booking listings in October 2026 named Atoll Transfer, at about USD 55 per person one way, and Coral Speed, at about USD 50. Your guesthouse normally books the seat and meets you at the airport. Confirm the operator, the price and whether it waits for a delayed flight.
Can I fly by seaplane to Ukulhas?
Not directly. Trans Maldivian seaplanes serve nearby Rasdhoo, which Wikivoyage says is about 20 minutes from Ukulhas by speedboat. That adds cost and a change of boat, so it mainly suits travellers combining Ukulhas with a stay on Rasdhoo or a resort.
How early should I leave Ukulhas for my flight home?
The 06:30 boat reaches the airport around 08:00, which suits midday or afternoon flights. The 12:30 boat suits evening flights such as Batik Air. If your flight leaves before about 11:00, spend the last night in Hulhumale instead.
Is the public ferry worth it?
It costs a few US dollars but takes about 4 hours and runs only a few days a week, with no Friday service. Sources disagree on the days and the Male terminal, so confirm with your guesthouse or MTCC. One tour operator switched its guests to speedboat-only transfers from 1 November 2026.
