Keyodhoo is a small inhabited island in Vaavu Atoll, about 600 to 700 residents, and one of the atoll's three main guesthouse islands with Fulidhoo and Thinadhoo. Its draw is the water: channel dives, nurse sharks and a shipwreck you can snorkel.
This page covers who Keyodhoo suits, how the transfer works and what to check before booking. For the atoll overview, read the Vaavu atoll guide. New to guesthouse trips? Start with the local islands beginner guide.
What is Keyodhoo like?
Keyodhoo is a quiet fishing village with a growing guesthouse scene, around 17 guesthouses by one 2026 count. Visit Maldives notes that some Vaavu guesthouses are close to resort standard.
There is a designated bikini beach with soft sand and some palm shade, but no resort-style loungers. Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees. Food comes mainly from guesthouses, a few small cafes and at least two restaurants, most of them cash-only.
How do you get to Keyodhoo from Male airport?
Most travellers take a shared speedboat booked through their guesthouse.
| Option | Time | Reported price | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared speedboat (for example Dream Speed) | About 1h45 to 2h10 | USD 72 to 88 per person one way | Around 10:00 and 16:00 from Male |
| Public ferry | About 3 to 5 hours | A few USD, no official fare | 3 to 4 times a week, not Fridays |
| Private speedboat | About 1.5 to 2 hours | Hundreds of USD per boat | On request |
Prices are from aMaldives, updated 22 April 2026, and should be confirmed when you book. Some guesthouses quote 60 to 90 minutes, but 2026 checks of the shared boat found nearly two hours, so plan on the longer figure.
At RM4.09 per USD, USD 72 to 88 is about RM294 to RM360 per person each way. A couple's return transfers are then roughly RM1,178 to RM1,440 (4 trips × 72 to 88 × 4.09).
The 16:00 boat is the last one. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals connect comfortably. If you land later, stay in Hulhumale. See our airport transfer guide for how speedboats compare with other modes.
Diving and snorkelling from Keyodhoo
This is why most people choose Keyodhoo.
- Miyaru Kandu (Shark Channel): reef sharks and big fish in current. For experienced divers.
- Fotteyo Kandu: one of Vaavu's best-known channel dives.
- Alimatha jetty night dive: nurse sharks and stingrays after dark.
- Keyodhoo shipwreck: half-submerged in the lagoon, mast above water, corals and clownfish on the hull.
- House reef: gentle currents, turtles, rays and reef fish near the harbour.
Muraka Diving is reported as the island's PADI centre, with Keyodhoo Dive and Watersports also operating. Visibility is often best from December to March. Check your operator's licence, ask about current conditions and log your dives.
Other trips include fishing, jet ski, parasailing and kayaking. Keyodhoo is not a surf island.
Who does Keyodhoo suit?
- Good fit: certified divers, strong snorkellers, couples who want quiet and nature.
- Reasonable fit: families with older, confident swimmers; older travellers comfortable with a long boat ride.
- Weaker fit: first-timers wanting lots of choice, travellers with toddlers, and anyone arriving on the Batik evening flight without a Hulhumale night.
Neighbouring Fulidhoo is closer to Male and has nurse sharks by its jetty, so it suits snorkellers who want a shorter transfer.
Money, health and services
- Cash: bring USD in small notes. A dollar ATM was announced, but its status is unconfirmed.
- Health: a local health facility handles basic care. Serious cases go to Male, so carry travel insurance with evacuation cover. The nearest confirmed hyperbaric chamber for divers is at ADK Hospital in Male.
- Connectivity: 4G is generally available; guesthouse Wi-Fi varies.
- Water: desalinated tap water; drink bottled water.
What does a stay cost?
As a planning range, local-island guesthouse rooms typically run about USD 60 to 180 per room per night before taxes (holiday.com.mv, checked 11 October 2026). One Keyodhoo listing starts from USD 152 per night (Resortlife, checked 12 October 2026).
Add 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST to the room, and USD 6 per person per night Green Tax. Dives, transfers and meals usually cost more than the room on a dive trip, so budget them separately with the trip cost calculator.
Customs and practical tips
- Swimwear on the bikini beach only.

- Fridays are quiet, with no public ferry and closures around midday prayers.
