What to do on Maafushi: activities, beach and excursions

You have booked Maafushi and want to know how to spend three or four days there well.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

On Maafushi itself, the main draw is the designated bikini beach on the island's tourist side. Most of the best experiences are boat trips sold by guesthouses and tour desks, such as half-day snorkelling and sandbank trips (about USD 25 to 50 per person), dolphin cruises (about USD 20 to 35), scuba dives and resort day passes. Plan one boat trip a day and leave the afternoons free.

Good for

  • first-timers on a budget
  • short trips

Worth knowing

  • Busier than smaller local islands
  • Public ferry does not run on Fridays
  • Swimwear only on the designated bikini beach; cover shoulders and knees in the village

Getting there from Male airport

  • shared speedboat: about 30 to 35 minutesUSD 25 per person one way, advance booking required (Maafushi.com, checked 2026-10-12)
  • public ferry: about 90 minutes to 2 hours

Maafushi is a base for boat trips more than a beach destination in itself. The island gives you a swimming beach, cafes and a village, and the sea around it does the rest.

For the bigger picture of the island and who it suits, see the Maafushi island guide.

The bikini beach

Swimwear, including bikinis, is allowed only on the designated bikini beach. Guides describe it as a stretch of white sand with palms, sun loungers and a few cafes and juice bars at the edge.

It gets crowded in high season. One 2026 guide suggests arriving around 08:00 for a good spot, which is also the coolest time of day.

Outside the beach, cover shoulders and knees. Read our guide on local island dress rules before you pack.

Which excursions are worth booking?

Most guesthouses and tour desks sell the same core trips. These ranges come from a 2026 Maafushi guide (aMaldives, checked 12 Oct 2026) and are planning figures, not quotes.

Malaysian Muslim packages, such as the HolidayGoGoGo Arena Beach tour, bundle a snorkel trip, a sandbank visit and a dolphin cruise into the price.

How to choose an operator

Ask the same questions of every operator before you pay. The answers matter more than the price.

  • Is a life jacket provided in every size, including children's?
  • Does a guide enter the water with the group?
  • How long is the boat ride, and how long in the water?
  • What happens if weather cancels the trip: refund or new date?
  • Is lunch, water or snorkel gear included?

Our page on choosing a snorkelling excursion safely explains each check.

Resort day trips from Maafushi

Several resorts nearby sell day passes to guests from Maafushi. The 2026 guide names Fihalhohi, Rihiveli and Adaaran Club Rannalhi, at about USD 100 to 180 per person.

A day pass suits travellers who want a pool and a quieter beach for a few hours. If a resort feel matters a lot, compare it with moving from Maafushi to a resort for a night.

A simple 3-day plan

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Land on a morning flight, take the speedboat, and spend the afternoon on the bikini beach. Book your trips for the next two days with your guesthouse.

Day 2: Snorkel and sandbank

Take a morning snorkelling and sandbank trip while the sea is calm. Rest in the afternoon, then join a sunset dolphin cruise if you still have energy.

Day 3: Choose your highlight

Pick a dive, a resort day trip or a slow beach day. Pack the night before if your boat to the airport leaves early on Day 4.

Swimming safety and conditions

Currents can be strong at reef edges and channels. Swim where guides and other guests swim, and use a life jacket on boat trips even if you swim well.

From about May to November, the southwest monsoon brings more wind and rougher seas, and some trips may be cancelled. December to April is usually calmer.

Activities by traveller type

Different groups get the most from different trips. Use this as a starting point when you plan your days.

  • Honeymooners: a sandbank trip in the morning and a sunset dolphin cruise, with a resort day pass if budget allows.
  • Families with young children: the bikini beach, a short dolphin cruise and a sandbank trip with life jackets for everyone.
  • Friend groups: snorkelling, jet skis and parasailing, which are often cheaper per person when booked as a group.
  • Older travellers: dolphin cruises and beach time, avoiding long snorkel sessions over deep water.
  • Divers: a few boat dives with an island dive centre, after checking certification and insurance.

What to pack for excursions

Bring reef-safe sun cream, a rash guard, a hat and a refillable water bottle. A dry bag keeps phones and passports safe on the boat.

Many operators supply snorkel gear, but your own mask fits better. Carry US dollars in small notes for tips and for operators who do not take cards.

Who Maafushi's activities suit

Maafushi suits travellers who like a full programme and easy booking. Choice is wide and trips leave daily.

If whale sharks are your main goal, a South Ari island such as Dhigurah puts you closer. Compare Maafushi and Dhigurah before deciding.

Questions travellers ask

Can I snorkel straight off the beach on Maafushi?
The bikini beach is good for swimming and relaxing, but the best reefs are reached by boat. That is why half-day snorkelling trips are the most popular excursion. If you swim off the beach, stay inside the area used by other guests and watch for boat traffic near the harbour.
Is it safe to book excursions from street tour desks?
Most trips are sold by guesthouses and small operators. Choose one that provides life jackets in all sizes, a guide in the water and a clear itinerary with times. Our guide on choosing a snorkelling trip safely lists what to ask before you hand over money.
Are the resort day trips worth it?
They suit travellers who want a resort pool, beach and, for non-Muslim guests, a drink, without paying for a full night. Prices are high for a few hours, so compare what is included, such as lunch, transfers and beach access, with simply adding one resort night later.
What can families with young children do?
The bikini beach is calm on most days, and sandbank trips suit children who can wear a life jacket. Dolphin cruises are short and easy. Long snorkel trips over deep water are better for older children who swim confidently.
