The short answer
Where your resort is decides the route. If it is also in South Ari atoll, a direct boat from Dhigurah is often the best answer. If it is anywhere else, you go back to Velana first and start the resort's normal transfer.
Dhigurah is a long, narrow local island known for whale shark trips in the South Ari Marine Protected Area. For the island itself, see the Dhigurah island guide. All transfer pages sit in the transfers hub.
The three routes compared
| Route | Typical time | Cost basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct boat from Dhigurah to a South Ari resort | Varies by resort, often well under 2 hours | Priced per boat by the resort | Resorts in South Ari that agree to collect |
| Shared speedboat to Velana, then resort transfer | About 2 hours to the airport, then the resort leg | About USD 55 to 80 per person one way, plus resort transfer | Speedboat resorts near Male and seaplane resorts |
| Local boat to Maamigili, domestic flight to Velana, then resort transfer | Short boat, about 20 minute flight, plus waits | Domestic fare quoted by the airline or guesthouse | Afternoon moves, or when sea is rough |
The shared speedboat time and fare come from third-party guides, which agree on about two hours but vary on price. Treat the fare as a planning range and confirm with your guesthouse.
Route 1: direct boat within South Ari
This is the shortest move when it is available. The resort sends a boat to Dhigurah's jetty, or approves one arranged by your guesthouse.
Ask the resort three things. Does it collect from Dhigurah, what is the price per boat, and what time can the boat come?
Some resorts only accept their own transfers from Velana. If yours does, it may still be worth asking whether a seaplane can pick up near Dhigurah, though that depends entirely on the resort and operator.
Route 2: back to Velana by shared speedboat
This route works for every resort. Third-party guides describe shared speedboats leaving Dhigurah twice a day, early morning and early afternoon, with different times on Fridays.
The morning boat is the safe choice for a seaplane resort. It reaches Velana around mid-morning, well before the 15:30 planning cut-off for seaplanes.
The afternoon boat can still work for a speedboat resort near Male that runs into the evening. Confirm the resort's last boat on your date before choosing it.
Route 3: via Maamigili domestic airport
Maamigili airport, near Dhigurah in South Ari, has domestic flights to Velana of about 20 minutes. A short boat or road connection links it with Dhigurah.
Third-party guides put this domestic flight at roughly USD 150 to 206 per person one way, but fares and timings change. Ask your guesthouse or the airline for a current quote.
This route suits moves on rough-sea days, or when the only shared speedboat is too late. Remember that domestic flights often allow only about 20 kg checked baggage. Read domestic flight plus speedboat transfers explained for how the domestic terminal works.
A worked example: Dhigurah to a seaplane resort in Baa
A couple spends three nights on Dhigurah for whale sharks, then flies to a resort in Baa atoll by seaplane. Times are illustrative, to confirm with each operator.
| Step | Example timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Early shared speedboat from Dhigurah | Booked days in advance |
| Late morning | Arrive at Velana | About two hours on the water |
| Midday | Meet the resort host at arrivals | Bags weighed for 20 kg limit |
| Afternoon | Seaplane to Baa | Before the daylight cut-off |
At the top of the third-party fare range, two adults pay about USD 160 for the Dhigurah leg, roughly RM654 at RM4.09 per USD. Add the resort's seaplane price on top.
Our five-night itinerary with two nights on Dhigurah then a resort shows how this fits a short trip.
Fridays, weather and seasickness
Friday boat times are different and fewer. Guides list adjusted Friday departures from Dhigurah, so confirm the exact time early if your move falls on a Friday.
The crossing is long and open, and it can be rough in the southwest monsoon from about May to November. Seasick-prone travellers should take a remedy before boarding, or consider the Maamigili flight. See seasickness on boat transfers.
Who this split suits, and who should rethink it
It suits wildlife lovers, divers and couples who want two or three nights of whale shark trips before a resort finish. A South Ari resort makes the move shortest.
It suits families with toddlers and short trips less well, because the two-hour crossing takes much of a day. For a simpler split, compare moving from Maafushi to a resort, which is closer to the airport.
