Maamigili is the airport island of Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari). Many travellers pass through on the way to Dhigurah or a South Ari resort, but you can also stay here.
Its main advantage is time. A short flight replaces a long boat ride, which matters on a 4D3N trip from Malaysia.
What is Maamigili like?
Maamigili is a mid-sized inhabited island, with an island guide reporting about 2,500 residents. It has a village, a harbour and Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM), a private domestic airport.
Life is quiet and local. There is a designated tourist beach reported by island guides, and swimwear belongs there or inside your guesthouse. Confirm the beach location and facilities with your guesthouse, since we could not confirm them from an official source.
Who does Maamigili suit?
Maamigili suits travellers who want South Ari wildlife without losing half a day to boats.
| Traveller | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short-trip couple or friends | Good | About 20 to 30 min flight from Male |
| Whale shark seekers | Good | Next to the South Ari Marine Protected Area |
| Travellers prone to seasickness | Good | Flight avoids the open-water crossing |
| Older travellers | Fair | Easy access, but only a health centre on island |
| Honeymooners | Weaker | Few beach and dining choices; consider a resort |
How does a stay work?
You stay in a small guesthouse that arranges your flight or boat, meals and trips. Island guides list about nine, including Shamar Guest House (which reports its own dive centre), Hiyalee Inn, Oren and Maaniya Palace.
Most guesthouses offer breakfast and can add lunch and dinner. With only a few cafes on the island, half or full board is often the simplest food plan.
Confirm each guesthouse is registered with the Ministry of Tourism. A confirmed booking at a registered property is part of the Maldives entry rules.
Getting there in brief
The domestic flight takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Mid-2026 schedule data lists Male departures around 13:00 to 13:30 and 17:00, so a morning KUL flight connects well.
Shared speedboats are reported at about 1.5 to 2 hours and USD 60 to 70 per person one way. Details are in our guide on how to get to Maamigili from Male airport, and transfer types are compared in airport transfers explained.
Practical services
- Money: one Bank of Maldives ATM is reported (April 2026 island guide). Bring US dollars and some rufiyaa as backup.
- Health: a health centre and pharmacy are reported; no hospital. The atoll hospital is on Mahibadhoo.
- Mobile data: 4G from both main networks is reported, and most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi.
- Alcohol: not available on the island.
- Friday: prayer day, so shops and some services slow down at midday.
Whale sharks and the reef
Whale sharks are seen year-round in South Ari, with most sightings from about August to November (Visit Maldives). Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them.
Island guides also list dolphin trips, sandbank picnics, sunset fishing and diving. Read how to add a whale shark trip from a local island before you pay for one.
Before you book: checklist
- Get the domestic flight price per person, each way, and the baggage allowance in writing.
- Match the flight or boat times to your KUL arrival and departure.
- Ask for the nett room price including 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST and USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night.
- Confirm the tourist beach location and whether swimwear rules allow swimming near your guesthouse.
- File the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours of arrival.
A sample 4D3N on Maamigili
A short trip from KUL can work like this, using the morning or midday flights from Malaysia.
- Day 1: land at Velana, take the early-afternoon flight to Maamigili, check in and walk to the tourist beach.
- Day 2: whale shark and snorkelling trip in South Ari with a SAMPA-certified guide.
- Day 3: sandbank picnic or dive in the morning, beach and sunset in the afternoon.
- Day 4: early-morning flight to Male to connect with a midday flight home.
Confirm every flight time in writing, since schedules change.
When a different choice works better
Choose Dhigurah for a long beach, about 20 minutes by boat from Maamigili. Choose Mahibadhoo if you want more cafes and a hospital on the island.
Choose a South Ari resort if privacy, alcohol or a water villa matter more than budget.
