What is Maldives weather like in October?

October is part of the southwest monsoon, the wetter season that Visit Maldives places between May and November. Expect a mix of sunny spells, passing showers and some windy days.

Temperatures barely move through the year. Maldives Meteorological Service reports show daytime highs around 30 to 31 C and night lows around 24 to 26 C.

A Maldives Meteorological Service monthly report recorded about 240 to 270 mm of rain in central and southern atolls one October, and about 200 mm in the north. That is a single-year figure, not a long-term average, so treat it as a guide to scale. The best time to visit the Maldives from Malaysia page and the when to visit hub compare every month.

How weather affects your transfer in October

Transfers are the part of an October trip most likely to feel the weather. A choppy channel makes a speedboat ride slower and bumpier, and heavy squalls can hold a seaplane on the water for a while.

Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset, and Trans Maldivian asks guests to land in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day transfer. In a wetter month, picking the morning AirAsia or late-morning Malaysia Airlines arrival gives you more slack if a squall delays departures.

Travellers prone to seasickness may prefer a resort close to Male with a short boat ride. Read does bad weather affect Maldives seaplanes for what usually happens on a stormy afternoon.

What does October cost compared with other months?

October is usually priced below December. Malaysian packages checked on 11 October 2026 show the pattern clearly.

The HolidayGoGoGo 5D4N twin island honeymoon package (two nights Maafushi, two nights Centara Ras Fushi) was RM5,379 per person twin share for 16 to 31 October 2026, rising to RM5,499 from 1 November. It included speedboats, meals as listed and taxes, but not flights or any festive surcharge.

The AF Travel Le Meridien Thilamaafushi 4D3N package was RM8,696 per adult twin share for 1 October to 23 December 2026, flights excluded. Late December and early January were not priced on the page, which often signals festive pricing.

Prices change often, so check current rates before you decide. You can plug your own numbers into the trip cost guide.

Malaysian holidays and leave planning

There is no Malaysian school holiday in October. The 2026 second-term break ended on 6 September and the year-end break starts on 5 December for Group B states (ecentral.my, from the KPM calendar).

Deepavali moves each year. In 2026 it falls on Sunday 8 November, with a replacement holiday on Monday 9 November in most states, so it sits just after October rather than in it.

That makes October a month for annual leave. A Thursday to Monday trip with two days of leave gives four nights, which is enough for a speedboat resort or a local island.

Who October suits, and who should pick another month

October suits couples, honeymooners and adult friend groups who can travel outside school breaks. It also suits divers and snorkellers interested in South Ari, as long as they accept that wildlife is never promised.

Families with school-age children usually do better in the December break, though prices and crowds are higher then. Travellers who want the driest odds should look at January to April instead.

A simple October planning rule

Use this rule when planning an October trip:

  1. Pick a morning arrival flight so a slow transfer still lands you before sunset.
  2. Choose a resort or island with good indoor options, such as a spa, library or covered dining.
  3. Keep one flexible day for snorkelling or excursions, in case of a windy day.
  4. Buy travel insurance that covers weather delays.
  5. Check that the package price states whether taxes and Green Tax are included.

Questions travellers ask

Is October too rainy for a Maldives holiday?
Not for most travellers. Rain in the Maldives often comes as showers that pass, with sunny spells between them, but some days are grey and wet. A Maldives Meteorological Service report recorded about 240 to 270 mm in central and southern atolls one October. Plan indoor or spa options and keep the trip flexible.
Are October prices lower than December?
Usually yes. Published Malaysian packages show October rates below late-December festive dates, and some exclude a festive surcharge that applies later. For example, one 5D4N package was RM5,379 per person for 16 to 31 October 2026 against RM5,499 from November. Compare like for like, including inclusions and taxes.
Is October good for whale sharks?
It falls in the August to November peak for South Ari, according to Visit Maldives, but sightings are never promised. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Choose a resort or guesthouse with access to licensed trips if this matters to you.
Can families travel in October?
Yes, but there is no school break, so children would miss school. Families who want the Maldives during school holidays usually look at late May to early June or December. If you are flexible with preschool children, October can work well and is often quieter than December.
