Getting to Shaviyani from Male airport: options and limitations

Reaching Shaviyani means one extra flight after you land in Male, usually a seaplane straight to your resort. Getting the timing right decides whether your first evening is on the beach or in an airport hotel.

What are your options?

There are two practical routes from Velana International Airport. A speedboat from Male is not realistic over this distance.

Trans Maldivian Airways began seaplane service to JW Marriott Maldives in 2019, and Sirru Fen Fushi describes its arrival as starting with a seaplane flight. Times above come from agency and listing pages, so treat the resort's confirmation as final.

How does this fit a flight from KLIA?

Malaysia is three hours ahead of the Maldives. Match your landing time to the seaplane day.

• AirAsia, lands about 09:50. Comfortable for a seaplane. Expect to reach your resort by early afternoon, depending on the lounge wait.
• Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25. Still fine for a seaplane in most cases. Immigration and baggage take time, so do not plan anything at the resort before mid-afternoon.
• Batik Air, lands about 21:55. Seaplanes have stopped. Book a night in Hulhumale and fly out the next morning.

Going home, Trans Maldivian handles departing guests whose international flight leaves after about 09:00. Afternoon flights to KLIA are the easiest fit.

What limitations should you plan for?

Daylight only. Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset. One German tour operator lists arrival and departure windows of roughly 09:00 to 15:00 for this resort and warns that waits of three hours or more are possible.

Shared flights. A seaplane may stop at one Shaviyani resort and continue to the other. One guest account describes about 50 minutes to the first resort and 10 more to the second.

Luggage. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage, charges about USD 5 per kg for excess, and caps any single bag at 32 kg. Infants under two fly free but have no baggage allowance.

Weather. Strong winds or poor visibility can delay seaplanes. Ask your resort what its backup is, and whether the Funadhoo flight is offered when flying is disrupted.

Seaplane or domestic flight?

Choose the seaplane if you land on a morning flight, travel light and want to step off at the resort jetty. It is the standard route for both main resorts.

Families with toddlers often prefer the seaplane because it avoids a second boat leg, but pack snacks and ear protection for the noisy cabin.

Choose the domestic flight if you are carrying heavy or bulky luggage, are nervous about small floatplanes, or seaplane seats are not available. Our explainer on domestic flight plus speedboat transfers shows how these connections are timed.

Older travellers who find steps difficult should ask how boarding works on each option. Seaplanes board from a floating platform, while domestic flights use a standard terminal.

What does the transfer cost?

Seaplane transfers are priced by each resort, usually per person return, and are often a significant part of the total. Ask for the transfer price as a separate line in any quote so you can compare resorts like for like.

As a planning range, domestic flight plus speedboat transfers to distant atolls cost about USD 350 to 520 per adult return (immaldives transfer guide, checked 11 October 2026). That is roughly RM1,430 to RM2,130 at RM4.09 per USD.
