Quick answer

Thinadhoo is a small inhabited island in Vaavu Atoll, reached from Velana airport by shared speedboat in about 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours. A 2026 island guide reports about 10 guesthouses, a quiet bikini beach of about 500 m and access to Vaavu channel dives such as Fotteyo and Miyaru Kandu. It suits couples, divers and travellers who want calm; it is not the larger Thinadhoo town in Gaafu Dhaalu.

Thinadhoo in Vaavu is a quiet local island for travellers who want a long beach and good diving without the busier feel of Maafushi. It sits in the same atoll as Fulidhoo, south of the Male atolls.

This page is the full guide to the island, including transfers and a sample budget. For the wider area, read the Vaavu Atoll guide, or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Thinadhoo (Vaavu)?

Thinadhoo is a small inhabited island in Vaavu Atoll with a relatively low local population, according to a 2026 island guide. It has a village, a health centre, local shops and a growing guesthouse scene.

Do not confuse it with Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, a much larger town in the far south reached by domestic flight. Check the atoll name on every booking.

Island customs and the bikini beach

Thinadhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, cafes and shops, and expect shops to pause briefly at prayer times.

A 2026 island guide describes a bikini beach of about 500 m with palm shade, where guesthouses often set out sun loungers. Swimwear is for the bikini beach only. Read what a bikini beach is for the general rules.

Where to stay: the guesthouse scene

The same guide counts about 10 guesthouses. They range from tiny places such as Casa Baraabaru (3 rooms) and Akiri Grand (4 rooms) to larger properties.

Getting there from Velana airport

Most visitors take a shared speedboat, which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours. Fares reported across guides range from about USD 25 to 85 per person each way, so ask your guesthouse for a written price.

A 2026 guide warns that flights landing after about 16:00 are likely to miss the last shared boat. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals from KUL usually connect; Batik Air's 21:55 arrival needs a night in Hulhumale. What to do on Thinadhoo

Diving is the main draw. A 2026 guide names Fotteyo Kandu, Miyaru Kandu, the Alimatha jetty night dive and a Vaavu wreck, with operators including Vaavu Excursions and Plumeria Diving.

Snorkelling is reported from the beach on the house reef, and guesthouses arrange snorkelling safaris, fishing trips and water sports. Surf is minimal. Evenings are quiet, with a few cafes and guesthouse dinners.

Sample budget for two

This is a planning example, not a quote: two adults, one room at USD 90 per night before tax, 4 nights, at RM 4.09 per USD. USD 90 sits inside the USD 60 to 180 guesthouse band in a 2026 market benchmark.

Tourism GST 17% on room plus service67.32
Green Tax, 2 guests x 4 nights x USD 648.00

Add speedboats once quoted: at USD 60 per person each way, for example, two people return add USD 240, about RM 982. Then add flights, meals and dives. Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Money, health and practical checklist

  • Cash: a Bank of Maldives ATM was reported in September 2025, but bring US dollars from the airport in case it is out of service.
  • Health: a basic health centre only; serious cases go to Male.
  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Season: the northeast monsoon, about December to April, usually brings calmer seas for the long boat ride.

When a different choice works better

Choose Fulidhoo, also in Vaavu, for nurse sharks by the jetty and a more established small-island scene. Choose Maafushi or Himmafushi for short trips, late flights or more restaurants.

Choose Thinadhoo when a long quiet beach and diving matter most, and you have at least four nights. The Vaavu local island versus resort guide helps if you are also weighing a resort.

Questions travellers ask

How do I avoid confusing Thinadhoo (Vaavu) with Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu?
Gaafu Dhaalu's Thinadhoo is a large southern town reached by domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo. Vaavu's Thinadhoo is a small island south of the Male atolls, reached by speedboat. Always check the atoll name on the guesthouse listing, booking confirmation and transfer booking, and say Vaavu when you enquire.
Is there an ATM on Thinadhoo (Vaavu)?
A 2026 island guide reports a Bank of Maldives self-service ATM opening in September 2025, but the same guide still advises that cash access may be limited. Draw US dollars at Velana airport before the boat, and ask your guesthouse whether the ATM is working when you arrive.
Can I stay on Thinadhoo with young children?
Yes, if you are comfortable with a long speedboat ride and a quiet island. The beach is long and calm on good days, and some guesthouses have larger rooms. There is only a basic health centre, so bring medicines and carry travel insurance that covers evacuation to Male.
Is the food halal on Thinadhoo?
Thinadhoo is a Muslim community and alcohol is not sold on the island, so guesthouse food generally follows local Muslim norms. A 2026 guide lists a floating bar run by one guesthouse offshore. If you need formal halal certification, ask your guesthouse to confirm in writing.
What does a 4-night stay cost?
As a planning example for two adults at a USD 90 room, 4 nights of room, 10% service, 17% GST and Green Tax total about USD 511, or about RM 2,091 for the couple, before speedboats, meals and flights. Speedboat fares vary widely by source, so get a written quote from your guesthouse.
