Quick answer

For two adults, 4 nights in a guesthouse room at USD 80 per night comes to about RM 1,881 with service charge, 17% Tourism GST and Green Tax. Add about RM 818 for return shared speedboats at a planning figure of USD 50 per person each way, and about RM 2,311 for two return KUL flights at the 11 Oct 2026 lowest fare snapshot. That is roughly RM 5,010 for two before meals and trips. These are planning examples, not quotes.

Dhangethi is one of the cheaper ways to see South Ari, but the boats, taxes and trips add up. This page builds a budget line by line so you can change any number.

The short answer

Two adults spending 4 nights on Dhangethi should plan on roughly RM 5,000 before meals and activities, using a USD 80 room, shared speedboats and the cheapest flights we saw on 11 Oct 2026.

Every figure below is a planning example with its basis and date. Prices change, so treat it as a starting point and confirm with your guesthouse.

Assumptions: one room at USD 80 per night before tax, which sits inside the guesthouse band. Exchange rate RM 4.09 per USD.

In ringgit, USD 659.84 x 4.09 is about RM 2,699 for two.

Add flights: the lowest KUL to MLE return fare in a Traveloka search on 11 Oct 2026 was RM 1,155.42 per passenger, so two passengers add about RM 2,311. That fare may exclude checked bags.

Total for two, before meals and trips: about RM 5,010, or about RM 2,505 per person.

That is about RM 3,355 for the room, plus the same boats and flights, for roughly RM 6,484 for two before meals and trips.

What moves the number most

  • Boat fare: at USD 85 instead of USD 50 per person each way, two people pay USD 140 more, about RM 573.
  • Flights: fares rise in Malaysian school holidays and around Hari Raya and year-end.
  • Room rate: the gap between USD 80 and USD 150 rooms is about RM 1,474 over 4 nights.
  • Trips: whale shark trips, dives and sandbank picnics are paid one by one. Current published prices could not be confirmed, so ask your guesthouse for a written list.
  • Meal plan: some guesthouses include breakfast only, others offer half or full board.

How to read the tax lines

Service charge is added to the room rate first. Tourism GST of 17% is then charged on the room plus service charge, which is why the two together add about 28.7%, not 27%.

Green Tax is separate. It is charged per guest per night, not per room, so a family of four pays twice what a couple pays. Many guesthouse listings show the room rate only, so ask for an all-in price per night before you compare properties.

Paying for the trip

Guesthouses usually ask for a deposit by card or bank transfer, then the balance on arrival or departure. Some add a card fee, so confirm the currency, fee and cancellation terms in writing.

Pay for excursions on the island in US dollars cash where you can. Keep small notes, because change in dollars can be hard to find.

Costs that are easy to forget

  • A Hulhumale night if you land on the evening Batik Air flight.
  • Checked baggage on the cheapest fares.
  • Card fees at guesthouses, and cash for small cafes.
  • Travel insurance with dive cover if you plan to dive.

Who this budget suits

This is a budget to mid-range plan for couples, friends and divers. Families should add child boat fares and Green Tax for children over 2.

If your budget is closer to RM 3,000 per person including flights, a Kaafu island near Male saves on boats. Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator, and compare with the Dhigurah cost guide.

Questions travellers ask

Why is the speedboat fare range so wide?
The 2026 island guide we used quotes different ranges in different sections, from about USD 25 to 85 per person one way. Fares differ between pickups at Male and at the airport, between operators and by season. Ask your guesthouse for a written fare per adult and per child before you pay a deposit.
Do children pay Green Tax?
Children under 2 are exempt from Green Tax, according to MIRA. Older children pay the same USD 6 per night as adults at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. Check whether your guesthouse adds the tax to the invoice or collects it on arrival.
Is it cheaper than a resort?
Usually by a wide margin. A resort room before tax often starts several hundred US dollars per night, and resort Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night. On Dhangethi you trade that for simple rooms, no alcohol and paying separately for each boat trip.
Should I bring cash?
Yes. One Bank of Maldives ATM is reported on the island, but it dispenses rufiyaa and can be out of service. Bring US dollars for meals, small shops and excursions, and ask your guesthouse whether it accepts cards and what fee it adds.
