Dhangethi is a working village island in South Ari, the atoll best known for year-round whale sharks. It sits a short hop from Dhigurah and draws more divers than beach loungers.

This profile covers the island's character, who it suits and how a stay works. For the wider area, read the Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll guide, or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Dhangethi?

Dhangethi is an inhabited local island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, about 88 km south-west of Male. It measures about 925 m by 350 m, and the 2022 census counted 936 residents.

Wikipedia lists a council office, health centre, school to grade 10, court, traditional mosque and football ground. A 2024 travel blog describes a harbour on the east side, a newer jetty on the west, sports pitches in the centre and a large banyan tree.

Tourism is a big part of the economy now. A 2026 island directory lists about 18 guesthouses, three or four restaurants, convenience stores and several dive and excursion operators.

Who Dhangethi suits, and who should look elsewhere

Dhangethi works best for travellers who will spend their days on boats and reefs, and come back to a simple room at night.

If you want a longer beach and sandbank, compare the Dhigurah island guide. For a quieter village, see the Omadhoo island guide.

Island customs and the bikini beach

Dhangethi is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, shops and cafes, and expect shops to pause at prayer times, most noticeably around Friday midday prayers.

Two sources place the bikini beach at the south-east corner, a short walk from the village, with showers and toilets reported. Swimwear belongs there only. A 2026 guide notes it can get busy around midday when day-trippers arrive.

Alcohol is not sold on the island. If a drink at sunset matters to you, some guesthouses arrange trips to a nearby resort or a safari boat; ask before you book. Read what a bikini beach is for the general rules.

How a stay on Dhangethi works

Most days follow the tide and the boat schedule. Breakfast at the guesthouse, a morning dive or whale shark trip, lunch in the village, then the beach or a second trip.

Guesthouses act as your local fixer. They book the speedboat, arrange excursions with partner operators and often cook dinner if you ask. Confirm the meal plan in writing before you pay.

Evenings are quiet. Expect a walk around the harbour, a juice at a cafe and an early night before the next boat.

Getting there in brief

Shared speedboats from Male and the airport run twice a day, about 1.5 to 2 hours. A 2026 island guide reports departures around 10:45 and 16:00 (earlier on Fridays), with boats bound for Dhigurah also stopping here.

AirAsia (landing about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) from KUL usually connect. With Batik Air's 21:55 arrival, plan a night in Hulhumale. The full options, including the Maamigili flight and public ferry, are in how to get to Dhangethi from Male airport.

What to expect on costs

Dhangethi is a budget to mid-range trip. Rooms follow the general guesthouse market, and your biggest extras are the speedboat, dives and whale shark trips.

Taxes stack on the room rate: 10% service, 17% Tourism GST and USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. A worked example for two people sits in what a holiday on Dhangethi costs.

Money, health and practical checklist

  • Cash: one Bank of Maldives ATM is reported, but bring US dollars in case it is empty.
  • Health: a health centre handles basic care; serious cases go to Male.
  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Season: about December to April for calmer seas; whale sharks are seen year-round and peak about August to November, according to Visit Maldives.
  • Seasickness: the crossing is open water, so take medication before boarding in the wetter months.

When a different choice works better

Choose Dhigurah for the long beach and sandbank, or Maafushi for short trips and late flights close to Male. Choose a South Ari resort if privacy, an overwater villa and full service matter more than price.

Choose Dhangethi when diving and whale sharks are the point of the trip, you have four or more nights and a morning flight into Male.

Questions travellers ask

Is Dhangethi the same as Dhigurah?
No. They are separate islands a short boat ride apart in South Ari. Dhigurah is known for its long beach and sandbank, while Dhangethi is a slightly larger village with a stronger dive scene. Shared speedboats from Male usually stop at Dhangethi on the way to Dhigurah, so check your boat ticket names the right island.
Is Dhangethi suitable for Muslim travellers?
Yes. It is a Muslim community with a traditional mosque, no alcohol on the island and local food in small cafes. Guesthouse kitchens cook for guests, so ask your guesthouse about meal plans. Modest dress is expected everywhere except the bikini beach, which also makes the village comfortable for families who prefer that setting.
Can older travellers manage Dhangethi?
Most can, with planning. The island is flat and small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. The speedboat crossing is the hardest part, especially in the wetter months, and the health centre handles basic care only. Bring medicines, buy travel insurance and choose a guesthouse close to the jetty.
Is there an ATM on Dhangethi?
A 2024 travel blog and a 2026 island guide both report one Bank of Maldives ATM. It dispenses rufiyaa and can run empty, so bring enough US dollar cash from Velana airport for meals, trips and small shops, and ask your guesthouse whether it takes cards and what fee it adds.
