What to do on Dhigurah: activities, beach and excursions

You are heading to Dhigurah and want to make the most of the whale sharks and the long beach.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Dhigurah's two big draws are whale shark trips in the South Ari Marine Protected Area and the long west-side bikini beach that ends in a sandbank at the southern tip. Whale sharks are seen year-round, most often August to November, and only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them. Plan at least two whale shark attempts, keep the afternoons for the beach, and bring water when you walk to the sandbank.

Dhigurah is built for people who want time in the water. Whale sharks, reef snorkelling and a long walk to the sandbank fill most days.

Whale shark trips: how they work

Whale sharks are seen in the South Ari Marine Protected Area all year, with the most sightings from August to November, according to Visit Maldives. Dhigurah sits right beside this area.

Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks. Book through your guesthouse or a dive centre that can confirm its guides are certified.

Boats cruise the outer reef while a spotter looks for a shadow, then guests slip in with masks and fins. Our page on realistic whale shark expectations explains why some trips see nothing.

Rules in the water

Follow your guide and these rules on every encounter. They protect the animals and keep the area open to visitors.

  • Keep at least 3 m from the whale shark's head and body.
  • Never touch, chase or block its path.
  • Enter the water quietly, without splashing.

Read the full whale shark etiquette in South Ari before you go.

The bikini beach and the sandbank

A 2025 traveller guide describes the designated bikini beach as running along the whole west side of the island. Outside it, cover shoulders and knees.

The southern tip narrows into a sandbank, often called Long Beach. The same guide put it at about an hour's walk from the northern guesthouses, with free sun chairs near the end but nowhere to buy drinks.

Go around 09:00 or 10:00 before the midday heat, carry water and wear reef-safe sun cream.

Other excursions

Guesthouses and dive centres on the island sell a range of boat trips. Exact menus and prices vary, so ask for a written list.

A 2026 magazine article cited about USD 80 per person for a whale shark trip; treat it as a rough planning figure until your guesthouse confirms the price.

A 5-day plan

Day 1: Arrive by the late-morning boat

Land at Velana around 09:50 on AirAsia, take the late-morning speedboat and arrive early afternoon. Swim on the bikini beach and book your trips.

Day 2: First whale shark attempt

Go out in the morning when the sea is often calmer. Rest in the afternoon.

Day 3: Sandbank walk

Walk or cycle to the southern sandbank early, spend the morning there and return for lunch.

Day 4: Second whale shark attempt or a reef trip

Use the day for another whale shark search if the first missed, or try a reef or manta trip.

Day 5: Early boat back

The morning boat leaves around 06:30 to 07:00, so pack the night before. Check the time with your guesthouse.

Swimming conditions and safety

The lagoon along the beach is generally calm for swimming, but currents can be strong at reef edges and channels. Whale shark trips take place on the outer reef, in open water.

Wear a life jacket or float if you are not a confident swimmer, and tell your guide before you enter the water. Children should stay within arm's reach of an adult.

Divers should know that the nearest confirmed hyperbaric chambers are at ADK Hospital in Male and at Kandima in Dhaalu Atoll. Check your insurance covers diving before booking.

What to pack for Dhigurah

  • Reef-safe sun cream, a rash guard and a hat for long hours on the water.
  • Your own mask and snorkel if you have them, for a better fit.
  • A dry bag for phones and passports on the boat.
  • A refillable water bottle for the sandbank walk.
  • US dollars in small notes, since cards are not always accepted.

Who these activities suit

Confident swimmers and snorkellers get the most from Dhigurah. Weak swimmers and young children can still enjoy whale sharks from the boat and the calm beach.

If you only have 3 or 4 nights, Maafushi's activities are easier to fit in, and the best time for whale sharks helps you choose dates.

Questions travellers ask

Can I swim with the whale sharks?
Yes, snorkelling alongside them is the usual experience, under rules. Keep at least 3 m from the head and body, never touch them, and follow your guide. Scuba divers may meet them on dives too. Some people prefer to watch from the boat, especially young children or weak swimmers.
How long is a whale shark trip?
A 2025 traveller guide described trips of about 2 to 3 hours. Boats search along the reef edge, so time in the water varies. Some trips combine the search with a reef snorkel or a sandbank stop; ask what is included.
Do I need to walk to the sandbank?
You can walk along the beach or a shaded path, about an hour from the northern guesthouses according to a 2025 guide. Bicycles or a rickshaw are options, and some guesthouses include a transfer to the southern end. Go in the morning, wear sun protection and carry water.
What if the weather cancels my trip?
Boats may not go out in strong wind, especially from about May to November. Ask before you pay whether a cancelled trip is refunded or moved to another day, and leave a spare day in your plan for this reason.
