What to do on Thulusdhoo: surf, beaches and day trips

You are heading to Thulusdhoo and want to know what to do, whether you surf or not.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Thulusdhoo is built around surf. Cokes, a fast right-hander for intermediate and advanced surfers, breaks right off the island, and Chickens, a gentler left, is a short boat ride away at about USD 10 per person return. Non-surfers use the two designated bikini beaches, take snorkel and sandbank trips, and can ask their guesthouse about the reported Coca-Cola plant tours. Surf is most consistent from about March to October.

What you do on Thulusdhoo depends on one question: do you surf? Surfers come for two well-known breaks within easy reach. Everyone else gets a lively small island with bikini beaches and quick boat trips.

This page belongs to the surf, water sports and excursions hub. For the island's character and who it suits, read the Thulusdhoo island guide.

Surfing: Cokes and Chickens

Cokes is a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks over a shallow reef right off the island. Guides describe it as best for intermediate and advanced surfers, and recommend reef boots.

Chickens is a long, peeling left-hander off a neighbouring uninhabited island. It is gentler and often busier, and suits improving surfers and longboarders. Boats out are reported at about USD 10 per person return.

When is the surf season?

aMaldives puts the most consistent swell from about March to October, during the southwest monsoon. That season is also wetter and windier, which affects beach days and boat trips.

From about December to April seas are usually calmer. That suits snorkelling and beach time more than surf. See surf season and swell planning for month-by-month guidance.

Beaches for non-surfers

aMaldives names two designated tourist beaches where swimwear is allowed: an eastern beach and a northwest beach. Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees.

The beaches are smaller than on some quieter islands, but close to most guesthouses on a small island. Rules are explained in what a bikini beach is.

Guides also report a taxi boat from the bikini beach to an offshore bar boat, about USD 10 return. It sits outside the island and is optional; the island itself serves no alcohol.

The Coca-Cola plant

Thulusdhoo hosts the bottling plant of Male' Aerated Water Company, Coca-Cola's bottling partner in the Maldives. Coca-Cola's own release confirms a canning line on the island.

Travel guides report short tours at about 9:00 and 14:00, arranged through your guesthouse, with no photos inside. Tours are not advertised officially, so confirm they are running before you plan around one.

Boat trips and island hopping

Guesthouses arrange the usual local island trips: snorkelling on nearby reefs, sandbank picnics and sunset cruises. Ask what is running during your stay and the minimum group size.

The public ferry links Thulusdhoo with Himmafushi and Huraa except on Fridays, which makes a cheap half-day island hop possible. Prices for trips change, so ask for a written price before you go.

Surf etiquette and safety

Cokes is shallow and can be crowded with locals and visitors. Wait your turn, do not drop in on a surfer already riding the wave, and paddle wide of the takeoff zone.

Wear reef boots and a rash vest, and go out with a local surf guide on your first session. If you are unsure about conditions, watch for half an hour first.

Non-surfers should never swim in the break. Currents near the reef pass can be strong even on calm-looking days.

A sample four-day plan

  • Day 1: land on a morning flight, 11:00 or 16:00 speedboat, sunset on the eastern beach.
  • Day 2: dawn surf at Cokes or a beach morning; afternoon snorkel trip.
  • Day 3: boat to Chickens, or a sandbank picnic; Coca-Cola tour if available.
  • Day 4: final surf or swim, then the afternoon boat to the airport or a resort.

The costs of this plan are on what a Thulusdhoo holiday costs.

Who this suits, and when to look elsewhere

Surfers and friend groups get the most from Thulusdhoo. Families can enjoy it if they stick to tourist beaches and guided trips.

Complete beginners should read whether the Maldives suits beginner surfers first. Couples who want long, empty beaches may prefer what to do on Dhiffushi.

Questions travellers ask

When is the best time to surf Thulusdhoo?
Guides put the most consistent swell from about March to October, during the southwest monsoon. That also brings more wind and rain, and some surf guesthouses charge more from June to August. Our surf season planning page compares months in more detail.
Can children swim at Thulusdhoo?
Yes, on the designated tourist beaches, and on calm days. Keep children away from the surf breaks and the reef edge, where waves and currents can be strong. Reef shoes help on shallow coral, and a guided snorkel trip is safer than reef swims alone.
Is snorkelling good off Thulusdhoo?
There is shallow reef close to the island, but the best snorkelling is on boat trips to nearby reefs and sandbanks. Ask your guesthouse what is running that week, and book trips early in the stay in case weather cancels a day.
Can I visit other islands from Thulusdhoo?
Yes. The public ferry links Thulusdhoo with Himmafushi and Huraa on non-Fridays, and guesthouses arrange trips to nearby islands and resorts. Dhiffushi is also within reach by boat for a day of quieter beaches.
