South Ari: local island or resort for your holiday?

You know you want South Ari for the whale sharks, and now need to choose between a guesthouse island and a resort.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Choose a guesthouse on Dhigurah or Dhangethi if whale sharks and value come first, you are happy with a modest room and halal food without alcohol, and you can manage a 1.5 to 2 hour speedboat. Choose a resort if you want a house reef at your door, water villas, alcohol or a short seaplane or flight transfer. Both can reach the whale shark area.

The short verdict by traveller type

  • Budget travellers and solo snorkellers: a Dhigurah guesthouse, closest to the whale shark reef for the money.
  • Divers on a budget: Dhangethi, which has a dive centre and sits on the same speedboat route.
  • Honeymooners: a South Ari resort with water villas and a seaplane transfer.
  • Families with young children: a resort with a calm lagoon, or a guesthouse if the kids are confident swimmers and you are happy with simple rooms.
  • Older travellers: a resort reached by seaplane or the Maamigili flight, unless a 2-hour boat ride is fine.

What the local islands offer

Travel guide listings, checked October 2026, show around 41 guesthouses on Dhigurah, 18 on Dhangethi, 17 on Hangnaameedhoo, 9 on Maamigili and 8 on Mahibadhoo. Treat these counts as indicative, since listings change.

Dhigurah is the standout, with a long beach, a bikini beach and the sandbank at its tip. Visit Maldives lists Dhigurah and Maamigili among the local islands facing the South Ari marine park. Read the Dhigurah island guide for rooms and daily life.

What the resorts offer

South Ari has a long list of resorts, from Lily Beach and LUX* South Ari Atoll to Conrad Rangali, Centara Grand, Vilamendhoo and Nova. They range from all-inclusive family resorts to luxury water villas.

Lily Beach states a 25-minute seaplane from Male and also lists a domestic flight via Maamigili. See the Lily Beach planning profile for one example of what to check.

How a day differs on each

On a guesthouse island, your day is built around trips. A typical day might start with breakfast at the guesthouse, a morning whale shark excursion, lunch back on the island, and an afternoon on the bikini beach or the sandbank. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at the guesthouse or a local cafe.

At a resort, the villa and the house reef are the centre. You snorkel from the beach, eat at the resort's restaurants and book excursions such as a whale shark trip through the resort. Evenings may include a bar, a show or a beach dinner.

Neither is better in itself. The question is whether you want to be out on the water most days, or mostly enjoying where you sleep.

What to check before booking either

  • Whale shark trip details: price per person, how many hours, and whether guides are SAMPA certified.
  • Meal plan: many guesthouses offer breakfast only; resorts sell half board, full board or all inclusive.
  • Transfer timing: confirm the boat or seaplane for your arrival flight.
  • Prayer and halal needs: guesthouse islands have mosques nearby; at a resort, ask about prayer mats and qibla direction.
  • Family needs: cots, connecting rooms and child life jackets.

How the costs differ

Green Tax shows the gap clearly. For two adults over four nights, a guesthouse adds USD 6 x 2 x 4 = USD 48, about RM196 at RM4.09. A resort adds USD 12 x 2 x 4 = USD 96, about RM393.

Room rates, tax and transfers widen the gap further, often by several thousand ringgit per couple. Use the trip cost calculator with real quotes rather than estimating.

Decision rule

Pick the guesthouse if whale sharks are the main event and you will spend most days out on the water. Pick the resort if most of your time will be spent at the villa, pool or house reef.

If you cannot decide, split the stay. Two or three nights on Dhigurah followed by a resort gives you both, and a South Ari resort can often collect you by boat. See moving from Dhigurah to a Maldives resort.

When a different atoll works better

If you want a quieter guesthouse island with easy channel diving and a shorter boat from Male, look at the Vaavu atoll guide. Prices and guesthouse counts change, so confirm before you pay a deposit.

Questions travellers ask

Can I split my stay between Dhigurah and a resort?
Yes, and it is a popular plan. Spend two or three nights on Dhigurah for whale shark trips, then move to a resort. A South Ari resort may collect you by boat directly, which avoids returning to Male. Our guide to moving from Dhigurah to a resort walks through the options.
Do resorts run their own whale shark trips?
Many South Ari resorts sell whale shark excursions, run by their dive or excursion centre with certified guides. Ask how far the resort is from the protected area, how long the boat ride takes and the per person price before booking, because these vary a lot between resorts.
Is food on Dhigurah halal?
Guesthouses on local islands serve Maldivian and international food without pork or alcohol, and the community is Muslim. That makes eating straightforward for most Malaysian Muslim travellers. Ask your guesthouse about meal plans, since many offer breakfast only or half board and there are a few local cafes.
Is a guesthouse island suitable for older travellers?
Usually, if they are comfortable with sandy paths, simple rooms and a 1.5 to 2 hour boat ride. Choose a guesthouse close to the jetty and ask about steps at the jetty. If mobility is a concern, a resort reached by seaplane or the Maamigili flight is easier.
