Felidhoo island guide for Malaysians: Vaavu's quiet capital

Felidhoo is the administrative capital of Vaavu Atoll, yet it feels more like a village than a town. About 600 people live there, and tourism is limited to a few small guesthouses.

What is Felidhoo like?

Felidhoo is calm, small and walkable, with an island office, a school, a harbour and a few shops. Evenings are quiet and there is no alcohol.

There is a designated bikini beach with white sand, a shallow lagoon, sunbeds and palm shade, reported by travel guides. Guides disagree on some details, so confirm the beach zone with your guesthouse. Off the beach, cover shoulders and knees.

The house reef is close to shore, with turtles, rays and juvenile reef sharks reported, and it is best in the early morning.

How do you get to Felidhoo from Male airport?

Prices are from 2026 travel guides and a guesthouse listing; confirm the current fare when you book. One dive lodge quotes USD 60 per person one way with a minimum of 4 passengers, so small parties should ask whether that minimum applies.

What to do on Felidhoo

Felidhoo is a good base for Vaavu's well-known channels.

• Fotteyo Kandu: a channel dive with grey reef sharks and whitetips.
• Miyaru Kandu (Shark Channel): reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and seasonal mantas.
• Alimatha jetty night dive: nurse sharks after dark.
• Snorkel trips: reef trips, nurse shark trips and night snorkels arranged by guesthouses.
• Other: fishing, kayak and paddleboard, sandbank picnics.

Felidhoo Dive Club is reported as a PADI centre on the island. Channel dives often have strong current, so beginners should start on calmer reefs.

Who does Felidhoo suit?

• Good fit: divers, snorkellers, couples who want quiet, and older travellers who like a calm island with an ATM and pharmacy.
• Reasonable fit: families with confident swimmers.
• Weaker fit: first-timers who want plenty of cafes and excursions, groups looking for evening life, and families with toddlers who need a short transfer.

Close neighbours Fulidhoo and Keyodhoo have more guesthouses and similar diving.

Where to stay and what it costs

Guesthouses reported on Felidhoo include Finolhu Beach Guest House, Oshi Boutique, Tourist Inn Baani, Vaali Beach Lodge and Masfalhi View Inn, most with 6 to 11 rooms.

As a planning range, local-island guesthouse rooms typically cost about USD 60 to 180 per room per night before taxes (holiday.com.mv, checked 11 October 2026). Add 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST and USD 6 per person per night Green Tax.

Worked example for a couple, 4 nights, room USD 90 before tax:

• Room with service and GST: 90 × 4 × 1.287 = USD 463
• Green Tax: 6 × 2 × 4 = USD 48
• Speedboat, 4 one-way trips at USD 70: USD 280
• Total before meals and trips: USD 791, about RM3,235

Money, health and customs

• ATM: Bank of Maldives branch with ATM; foreign cards pay a fee (reported about MVR 100). Still bring some USD.
• Health: pharmacy on the island; serious cases go to Male.
• Dress: swimwear on the bikini beach only.
• Fridays: no public ferry and closures around midday prayers.
• Entry: file the free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
