Gan (Laamu) island guide for Malaysians: causeway roads, ruins and quiet guesthouses

You want a quiet, roomy local island in the far south and are wondering whether Gan in Laamu is worth the domestic flight.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Gan is a long, inhabited local island in Laamu Atoll, joined by causeway to Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo. It has no airport of its own, so you fly Male to Kadhdhoo (about 35 to 60 minutes) and drive over the causeway. It suits independent travellers who like cycling, surf, diving and a slow village pace; first-timers wanting a busy guesthouse island near Male are better served by Maafushi or Thulusdhoo.

Gan is one of the long, flat islands at the southern end of Laamu Atoll. It is joined by road to its neighbours, which makes it unusual among Maldivian local islands.

For the wider atoll, including resorts and surf, start with the Laamu atoll travel guide. The island directory compares other local islands.

What is Gan (Laamu) like?

Gan is a quiet residential island with long roads, trees and a scattering of guesthouses, rather than a packed tourist strip. aMaldives describes Gan, Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo as linked by causeway into about 18 km of road.

Gan is often called one of the largest islands in the country, though published lengths vary between sources. Treat it as big by Maldivian standards: you will want a bicycle, scooter lift or taxi rather than walking everywhere.

The island also has Buddhist-era archaeological sites, surveyed in the 1920s. Little remains above ground beyond mounds and scattered stones, so go for the story rather than grand ruins.

How do you get to Gan from Male?

You fly. Gan has no airport, so the route is a domestic flight from Velana (MLE) to Kadhdhoo (KDO), then a short car or taxi ride over the causeway.

Flight times quoted range from about 35 to 60 minutes, depending on the source and aircraft. Maldivian operates the route, and aMaldives reports five to six flights a day. Read our guide to Maldives airport transfers for how domestic flight connections work.

There is no practical public ferry from Male, and shared speedboats are generally not available, per aMaldives. Some listings mention a short speedboat from Kadhdhoo instead of a car; ask your guesthouse which it arranges.

Where do you stay on Gan?

Expect a small guesthouse scene. aMaldives lists Calm Beach Inn, Clouds Beach Retreat Laamu, Nazaki Residences and Sunsetvilla, mostly small properties with a handful of rooms.

The same listing places Equator Village on Gan, but that hotel is on Gan in Addu. This mix-up is common, so check the atoll on every booking.

When shortlisting, ask each guesthouse:

  • Is the property registered with the Ministry of Tourism? A confirmed booking at a registered property is part of the visa-on-arrival conditions.
  • Is the Kadhdhoo pick-up included, and is it by car or boat?
  • How far is the nearest beach where swimwear is allowed?
  • Are bicycles available, and is there a meal plan or nearby cafe?

What can you do on Gan?

The main draws are cycling the causeway road, surf, diving and quiet beach time. aMaldives names dive operators serving the area, including Emperor Divers Laamu, Divers Tribe and Mundoo Dive and Excursions.

Surfers come for the southern Laamu breaks, which our Laamu atoll guide covers in more detail. Snorkelling, fishing trips and visits to the freshwater area of Paree Fengandu are also listed.

aMaldives says Gan has designated bikini beaches. We could not confirm the exact locations, so ask your guesthouse. Away from them, cover shoulders and knees, as on any local island.

Practical services

Gan is an established community, so day-to-day needs are covered. aMaldives lists a Bank of Maldives branch and ATM, a Maldives Islamic Bank service point and several pharmacies.

For serious medical needs, the nearest larger facilities are on Kadhdhoo and further afield. Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. There is no alcohol on Gan.

What does a few days on Gan cost?

No dated guesthouse rates for Gan turned up in our research, so this page gives no room price. The flight is the biggest variable: aMaldives (updated 22 April 2026) lists USD 110 to 540 per person for Male to Kadhdhoo, without saying whether that is one way or return.

At RM4.09 per USD, that range is about RM450 to RM2,209 per person (110 x 4.09 = RM450; 540 x 4.09 = RM2,209). Add Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night at a registered guesthouse, plus 17% Tourism GST and any service charge on rooms.

Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator, and see how much a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia for full-trip examples. Prices change often, so confirm each figure when you enquire.

Who does Gan suit, and who should choose elsewhere?

Gan suits travellers who have done the Maldives before, or who want a quiet local island with room to explore. Surfers, divers, cyclists and couples happy with simple rooms fit well.

It suits less well:

  • First-timers on a 3-night trip. The domestic flight eats into your time. Maafushi or Thulusdhoo near Male are simpler.
  • Honeymooners wanting an overwater villa. Look at Laamu's resorts instead.
  • Older travellers needing quick hospital access. Islands near Male are closer to major hospitals.
  • Late Batik Air arrivals. You will need a night near the airport before flying south.

Questions travellers ask

Is Gan in Laamu the same as Gan in Addu?
No. They are two different islands about a few hundred kilometres apart. Gan in Addu is the airport island with the old RAF base. Gan in Laamu has no airport and is reached through Kadhdhoo. When you search flights or guesthouses, check the atoll name every time, because booking sites often mix the two up.
Can I take a public ferry from Male to Gan (Laamu)?
Not in any practical way for a holiday. aMaldives describes public ferries from Male as impractical for tourists and shared speedboats as generally unavailable. A private speedboat costs well over USD 1,000. For almost every Malaysian traveller, the domestic flight to Kadhdhoo is the realistic route.
Is Gan (Laamu) suitable for Muslim travellers?
Yes, in the way most local islands are. It is a Maldivian community, food at guesthouses and local cafes is typically halal by default, and there is no alcohol on the island. Ask your guesthouse about the nearest mosque and Friday prayer times. Dress modestly away from any designated bikini beach.
Can families with young children stay on Gan?
It works for relaxed families who are happy with simple guesthouse rooms and road trips by car or bicycle. Remember the extra domestic flight with luggage, and that serious medical cases go to facilities on Kadhdhoo or further. Families wanting kids clubs and easy pools will find a resort easier.
