Island customs and the bikini beach

Hangnaameedhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village and shops, and expect quieter streets around Friday midday prayers.

Several sources place the designated bikini beach on the western side, about 5 to 10 minutes' walk from most guesthouses. One guesthouse describes loungers and hammocks there. Swimwear belongs on that beach only. See what a bikini beach is.

Getting there from Velana airport

Most guests take a shared speedboat, reported at about 1h10 to 1h30, though some sources say up to 2 hours. Your guesthouse books the seat, ideally 24 to 48 hours ahead.

Return boats are reported around 07:00. AirAsia (landing about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) from KUL connect with the afternoon boat. A 2026 guide warns that arrivals after about 14:00 will likely miss it, so Batik Air (about 21:55) travellers should plan a night in Hulhumale.

What to do on Hangnaameedhoo

Snorkelling the house reef is the daily routine. Sources describe a shallow lagoon and a drop-off near the beach, with reef sharks, rays and turtles reported.

Dive centres on the island, including Fish Head Dives and Water Sports, run trips to sites such as Maaya Thila and Fish Head. Guesthouses arrange sandbank picnics, snorkelling safaris, dolphin cruises, sunset and night fishing, and kayaking.

Read whale shark encounter etiquette in South Ari before booking a whale shark trip.

Where to stay

A 2026 directory lists guesthouses including Detour Beach View (11 rooms), By The Shade (7), Coral Beach Maldives (6), Asia Inn (4), Beach Star Maldives (4) and Local Travel Beach Maldives (4). Others include Ari Paradise, Island Pavilion and Ocean Beach Inn.

When you shortlist, ask whether the rate includes breakfast and taxes, who books the speedboat, how far the room is from the bikini beach and whether snorkel gear is free. Confirm the registered property name on your invoice.

Money, health and practical checklist

  • Cash: sources disagree on the ATM, so bring US dollars; card fees of about 6% are reported.
  • Health: a health centre and pharmacy are reported; serious cases go to Male.
  • Food: minimarts and a few cafes; ask your guesthouse about meal plans.
  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Season: about December to April for calmer seas.

When a different choice works better

Choose Dhangethi or Dhigurah when whale sharks are the priority and you want more operators. Choose Maafushi for short trips or late flights near Male, and a South Ari resort for privacy and full service.

Choose Hangnaameedhoo when quiet and an easy reef come first, and you can reach Male before the afternoon boat.

Questions travellers ask

Is Hangnaameedhoo the same island as Omadhoo?
No. They are neighbouring islands in South Ari, and some activity listings mix them up, such as a turtle snorkelling point named after Omadhoo. Hangnaameedhoo is smaller, with about 480 residents in the 2022 census against about 900 on Omadhoo. Check that your guesthouse and boat are for the right island.
Is there an ATM on Hangnaameedhoo?
Sources disagree. A 2026 island guide reports a Bank of Maldives ATM installed by late 2025, while another travel site says there is none. Bring enough US dollar cash from Velana airport for meals and trips, and ask whether your guesthouse takes cards; one guide reports card fees of about 6%.
Is Hangnaameedhoo good for Muslim travellers and families?
It is a Muslim community with no alcohol on the island and modest dress in the village, which many Malaysian families find comfortable. The island is tiny and walkable, and a 2026 guide reports a 24-hour health centre and pharmacy. Serious cases go to Male, so bring medicines and travel insurance.
Can I do whale shark trips from Hangnaameedhoo?
Guesthouses arrange excursions across South Ari, where Visit Maldives says whale sharks are seen year-round with a peak about August to November. The island sits further north than Dhigurah and Dhangethi, so expect a longer boat ride to the whale shark area. Sightings are never guaranteed.
