How to get to Gan (Addu) from Male airport

You land in Male from KLIA and need to reach Gan, 545 km south, without wasting a day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

The only practical way from Male to Gan is a domestic flight of about 70 to 95 minutes on Maldivian or Manta Air. A Resortlife schedule snapshot showed Maldivian departures from Male at about 11:18 and 18:10, so a morning AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines arrival can usually connect the same day. Domestic fares run about USD 150 to 350 one way (aMaldives, May 2026), so check the live fare before you book.

For the atoll overview and resort choices, see the Addu atoll travel guide. For island life on Gan, read the Gan (Addu) island guide.

What are the options from Male to Gan?

There is one practical option: a domestic flight from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Gan International Airport (GAN). Resortlife puts the distance at about 545 km.

Maldivian flies daily according to Visit Maldives, and Manta Air also serves Gan. Idealo shows Maldivian on the route for August to September 2026, with listed durations of about 1h30 to 1h50.

Speedboats and seaplanes are not used for this distance.

How long does it take?

Expect about 70 to 95 minutes in the air. Resortlife gives 70 to 90 minutes block time, and aMaldives gives about 90 to 95 minutes.

From landing in Male to reaching your room on Gan, plan on four to eight hours. Most of that is the wait between flights.

Which Malaysian flights connect?

Morning arrivals from KLIA usually connect the same day. These are the typical nonstop arrival times from Kuala Lumpur, set against the Maldivian departures seen in one schedule snapshot.

Schedules change by season and day of week. Check live times on the Maldivian and Manta Air websites before you fix your international flight.

What does the flight cost?

We did not find a dated published fare for Male to Gan. aMaldives (May 2026) gives USD 150 to 350 one way per person as the general range for domestic flights, and about 20% off for children aged 2 to 11.

At RM4.09 per USD, that is about RM614 to RM1,432 one way, or RM1,228 to RM2,864 return per adult. Treat this as a planning range, not a fare.

Baggage and check-in

aMaldives says domestic flights generally allow 20 to 25 kg checked and 5 kg hand luggage, with excess charged per kg. Divers carrying gear should check the allowance on their exact ticket.

Allow time to re-check bags at the domestic terminal. Keep medicines, a power bank and documents in your hand luggage.

From Gan airport to your bed

Equator Village is about 1 km from the terminal. Hotels.com says guests must send flight details at least 3 days before arrival, and the shuttle is charged separately.

Guesthouses on Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo offer paid pick-ups along the causeway road. Resorts on other islands meet you for a short drive or speedboat transfer.

Constraints to plan around

  • Land in Male with at least three hours before your Gan flight.
  • If you arrive on Batik Air, book a night in Hulhumale.
  • Weather and aircraft rotation can delay turboprops, so keep a buffer on your last day before the flight home.
  • Fill in the IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before you land in Male.

Families and older travellers usually find the afternoon flight easier than a rushed morning connection. The Addu transfer options page explains how resort transfers work once you land.

Your flight day, step by step

  1. Check in for your KLIA flight with your IMUGA declaration done and your Gan ticket printed or saved offline.
  2. On landing at Velana, clear immigration and collect your bags. Immigration may ask for your onward booking, so keep your Gan hotel confirmation handy.
  3. Walk to the domestic terminal and check in again. Ask whether your bags count against a 20 kg or 25 kg allowance.
  4. Use the waiting time to buy a local SIM and some rufiyaa, since small shops in Addu often prefer cash.
  5. On landing at Gan, look for your hotel or guesthouse driver. Equator Village guests should already have sent their flight details at least 3 days before.

Who this route suits

The flight suits travellers with at least 4 nights, because each direction takes most of half a day. Families with toddlers may prefer the later Gan departure so children can rest in Male first.

Travellers with only 3 nights, or on a tight budget, usually get more beach time on a speedboat island near Male. Compare the cost in how much a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a ferry from Male to Gan?
We found no practical passenger ferry from Male to Addu for visitors. The distance is about 545 km, and every travel source we checked routes visitors by domestic flight. Public ferries in Addu run inside the atoll and to Fuvahmulah, not to Male.
Can I book the domestic flight myself?
Yes. Maldivian and Manta Air sell seats on their own websites. If you stay at a resort or a guesthouse that arranges transfers, it may book the flight with your stay, sometimes as a package price. Compare both, and keep your ticket on the same booking as your hotel if you want help when delays happen.
What if my international flight is late?
Leave at least three hours between landing at Velana and the domestic departure, because you must clear immigration, collect bags and check in again. If the last Gan flight goes, you will need a night in Hulhumale. A late evening Batik Air arrival almost always means an overnight stop.
Do children pay less on the domestic flight?
aMaldives says children aged 2 to 11 typically get about 20% off domestic fares. Infants under 2 usually fly on a lap fare. Confirm the exact child rule with the airline, because fare classes and promotions differ.
