Request a Maldives local island hopping package from Malaysia

You want to see more than one Maldivian local island on a budget trip from Malaysia and need a route that works with boat schedules.

Quick answer

Island hopping in the Maldives works best with two islands, rarely three, and at least 3 nights on each, because most islands connect through Male rather than directly. A quote should be built around your flight arrival time and the boat schedules for each leg. Guesthouse rooms start around USD 60 to 180 per night, and shared speedboats to islands like Maafushi are about USD 25 per person each way.

A local island hopping trip in the Maldives works best as two islands with at least 3 nights each. Most local islands connect through Male rather than to each other, so the route has to be planned around boat timings and your KLIA flight.

This page sits in our packages and quotations hub. If you are still choosing islands, compare them in Maafushi versus Dhigurah first.

How does moving between local islands actually work?

Islands within the same atoll can sometimes be linked by a direct speedboat or a guesthouse-arranged boat. Islands in different atolls usually mean returning to Male and catching a new boat.

Shared speedboats run on set times, often once or twice a day per route. Missing one can cost you most of a day, so the order of islands matters as much as the choice.

Public ferries are cheaper but slower and less frequent. We have not verified current ferry timetables, so treat them as an option to confirm with your guesthouse, not something to build a short trip on.

Route planning rules for a hopping trip

Use these rules to sketch a route before you ask for a quote.

  1. Two islands for 5 to 7 nights. Three islands only with 9 nights or more.
  2. At least 3 nights per island. Anything shorter is mostly packing and boats.
  3. Start near Male if you land late. Batik Air lands about 21:55, so a night in Hulhumale or a nearby island like Maafushi is sensible.
  4. Put the far island first if you land early. AirAsia lands about 09:50, giving time to reach South Ari islands such as Dhigurah on a day boat.
  5. End within easy reach of the airport. Your last night should allow a calm morning transfer for your flight home.
  6. Keep excursions inside the stay. Whale shark, sandbank and snorkel trips are best booked on full days, not transfer days.

Sample 6-night route: Dhigurah then Maafushi

This is an illustration of how a route fits together, not a priced package.

NightIslandWhy this order
1 to 3Dhigurah (South Ari)Reach it on the arrival day with a morning flight; whale shark area nearby
4 to 6Maafushi (Kaafu)Closer to Male for the flight home; many excursions and guesthouses

The middle transfer from Dhigurah to Maafushi usually goes through Male. Ask the quote to state the boat time for each leg and who meets you at each jetty.

What does an island hopping trip cost?

Guesthouse double rooms run about USD 60 to 180 per night before 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST and Green Tax. Green Tax at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer is USD 6 per guest per night.

Shared speedboats to Maafushi are listed at USD 25 per person each way. Longer routes to Ari cost more, so ask for each leg to be priced.

For published reference, 12Fly listed a 4D3N twin island trip from RM2,646 per person (basis to confirm, valid 1 Oct 2026 to 31 Oct 2027). See how much a local island trip costs for full budgets.

What should go in an island hopping brief?

  1. Islands: names if you have them, or what you want (quiet beach, nightlife-free, whale sharks, many excursions).
  2. Nights: total, and how you want them split.
  3. Flight: airline and arrival and departure times.
  4. Rooms: number of rooms, twin or double, budget per night.
  5. Meals: breakfast only or half board, halal is standard on local islands.
  6. Excursions: must-do trips and on which island.
  7. Resort add-on: whether you want a resort night at the end.

Who suits island hopping, and who should stay put?

  • Friends and solo travellers on a budget: the best fit, with variety at guesthouse prices.
  • Snorkellers: combine a whale shark island with one known for house reef snorkelling.
  • Families with young children and older travellers: one island, with day trips, is usually easier.
  • Couples wanting a water villa: add a resort finish, as in a local island and one night water villa quote.

Remember local island customs. Cover shoulders and knees in the village and wear swimwear only on designated bikini beaches. Prices and boat times change, so confirm them when you enquire.

Questions travellers ask

Can I island hop by public ferry to save money?
Public ferries exist on some routes and are cheaper than speedboats, but they are slower, run less often and timetables change. We have not verified current ferry schedules, so ask your guesthouse to confirm before you plan around one. For a short trip, a shared speedboat usually saves a day of waiting, which is often worth the extra cost.
How many islands can I visit in a week?
Two is comfortable in 6 or 7 nights. Three is possible but each move uses half a day or more and often routes you back through Male. If your goal is variety, pick two islands with different characters, for example a lively one with many excursions and a quiet one with a long beach.
Can I add a resort night to an island hopping trip?
Yes. Many travellers finish with one or two resort nights for a pool, alcohol and a water villa, since alcohol is not served on local islands. Choose a resort reachable by speedboat from your last island or from Male, and check the transfer cost before you commit.
Is island hopping suitable for families or older travellers?
It can be, but each move means packing, boat rides and luggage handling. Families with young children and older travellers often enjoy one island for the whole stay, perhaps with day trips. If you do hop, keep it to two islands and ask for help with luggage at each jetty.
