What to do on Thoddoo: activities, beach and excursions

You are planning days on Thoddoo and want to know what is worth doing beyond the beach.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Thoddoo's days revolve around its two designated tourist beaches, a reef reachable with a short swim, cycling to papaya and passion fruit farms, and guided snorkel, island hopping, fishing and dive trips sold by guesthouses and local dive centres. The outer reef can have strong currents, so snorkel there with a guide. Sample 2026 prices were about USD 30 to 50 for a snorkel trip and USD 50 to 80 for island hopping.

Thoddoo is a beach, reef and bicycle island. It is not packed with attractions, and most visitors like it for exactly that reason.

This page owns activities. For who the island suits, read the Thoddoo island guide; browse others in the island directory hub.

Which beach should you use?

Use the designated tourist beaches, the only places where swimwear is allowed. aMaldives (April 2026) describes two: Sunrise Beach in the northeast and Sunset Beach on the west side.

BeachCharacterGood for
Sunrise Beach (northeast)Usually quieterCouples, early swims, reading
Sunset Beach (west)Larger, more peopleSunsets, families, snorkel entry

Loungers and hammocks are usually free, with showers and toilets. Walk to the beach in covered clothing and change there. The rules are in what a bikini beach is.

Snorkelling the house reef safely

The reef is close: Wikivoyage describes snorkelling just off the beach, with the outer reef about 100 metres out. That makes Thoddoo good for confident swimmers.

The catch is current. Near the reef edge it can be strong enough to carry a weak swimmer along the island.

  • Snorkel with a buddy, never alone.
  • Ask your guesthouse each morning where the current runs.
  • Enter and exit at the same marked spot.
  • Wear a vest if you are a beginner or a nervous swimmer.
  • Go to the outer reef only with a guide.

Boat trips worth booking

Guesthouses and dive centres sell most trips. aMaldives gives these sample 2026 prices, which we treat as planning ranges, not quotes.

Manta trips are seasonal, with aMaldives citing about November to March. Divers can also reach North Ari sites such as Rasdhoo Madivaru, known for early-morning hammerhead dives (Dive The World).

aMaldives names Dive Aetas Thoddoo, a PADI centre, and Thoddoo Diving Center. Ask any operator about guide qualifications, group size and life jackets.

On land: farms, bikes and village life

Thoddoo is a farming island, mainly growing papaya and passion fruit, with some watermelon and vegetables. A fruit farm visit was listed at about USD 10, and fresh fruit straight from the farm is a highlight.

Many guesthouses lend bicycles free. Cycling the sandy roads between farms and beaches fills a slow afternoon.

In the village, dress modestly. Shops close briefly at prayer times and around Friday midday prayers.

Choosing an operator and staying safe on boats

Most trips are booked through your guesthouse, which works with local boat owners and dive centres. That is convenient, but ask a few questions before you pay.

Ask how many people will be on the boat, whether a guide will be in the water with snorkellers, and whether life jackets come in children's sizes. For diving, ask which agency certifies the instructors and whether you need a medical form.

The nearest confirmed hyperbaric chamber for divers is at ADK Hospital in Male, so take travel insurance that covers diving and evacuation. Avoid flying within 24 hours of your last dive, which matters if you leave by seaplane.

Pay attention to the weather on the day. If the guide says the sea is too rough, accept the change of plan; that is a good sign, not a bad one.

A simple 4-day plan

  1. Day 1: arrive on the afternoon boat, swim at Sunset Beach, dinner at your guesthouse.
  2. Day 2: guided snorkel trip in the morning, bike to the farms after lunch.
  3. Day 3: island hopping or a dive day; quiet evening.
  4. Day 4: early swim at Sunrise Beach, then lunch and the beach before your last night.

Keep the morning of your last day free, since the return boat leaves around 07:00. The Thoddoo cost guide shows what these days add to the budget.

Who will enjoy Thoddoo's activities, and who may not

Confident swimmers, couples and families who enjoy slow days will be happy. Divers find enough for a few days, especially in manta season.

If you want a long menu of excursions, water sports and evening options, Maafushi or Ukulhas may suit better. See what to do on Ukulhas for a comparison.

Questions travellers ask

Can I snorkel straight from the beach on Thoddoo?
Yes. Wikivoyage describes snorkelling just off the tourist beach, with the outer reef about 100 metres out. Currents near the reef edge can be strong, so beginners should stay close to shore, wear a vest and go with a guide for the outer reef. Ask your guesthouse each morning about conditions.
Can I visit a resort for the day from Thoddoo?
Guesthouses can arrange resort day trips, which is how some visitors enjoy a drink or a spa. Prices depend on the resort and usually include the boat and a lunch or credit. Ask for the full price per person with taxes, and the boat times, before you agree.
Is there anything to do in the evening?
Not much, and that is the appeal for many. Evenings are for dinner, a walk along the beach and stargazing. Some guesthouses run night fishing trips with a barbecue of the catch afterwards. There are no bars, as alcohol is not sold on the island.
Are trips running in the rainy season?
Mostly yes, but wind and swell from about May to November can cancel boat trips at short notice. Plan the trip you care about most for early in your stay, so it can move to another day. Beach and farm days are your back-up.
