Ukulhas is a beach-first island. Most visitors spend half their time in the lagoon and the rest on one or two well-chosen boat trips.
This page owns activities. For who the island suits, read the Ukulhas island guide; browse others in the island directory hub.
What is the Ukulhas beach like?
It is long and close. aMaldives (April 2026) describes about 1 km of white sand along the western and southern sides, with free sunbeds and umbrellas.
This is the designated tourist beach, the only place for swimwear. Walk there in covered clothing and change on the beach. Wikivoyage notes the rule is strictly enforced elsewhere on the island.
The lagoon is shallow and good for wading, floating and children's play. Read what a bikini beach is for the general rules.
Snorkelling from the beach
The lagoon makes Ukulhas one of the gentler local islands for beginners. Start in water where you can stand, check your mask seals, then move out slowly.
- Snorkel with a buddy, and tell your guesthouse where you are going.
- Stay inside the lagoon unless a guide is with you.
- Ask each morning about wind and current.
- Wear a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen.
Our beginner snorkelling guide covers technique, and the Thoddoo versus Ukulhas comparison for beginners explains why Ukulhas is often the easier start.

Diving from Ukulhas
aMaldives names several dive operators on the island, including Dive Ukulhas, Scuba Journey, Murakabay Maldives and Auof Dive and Nature Journeys. Compare group size, the dive sites they use and whether the price includes equipment.
North Ari is well known among divers. Nearby Rasdhoo Madivaru is famous for early-morning hammerhead dives, according to Dive The World. Bring your certification card and logbook.
The nearest confirmed hyperbaric chamber is at ADK Hospital in Male, so make sure your travel insurance covers diving. Leave at least a day between your last dive and your flight home.
Booking trips and staying safe
Book through your guesthouse or directly with a dive centre, and ask a few simple questions first. How many people will be on the boat? Is a guide in the water with snorkellers? Are there life jackets in children's sizes?
Weather decides most trips. From about May to November, wind and swell can cancel boats at short notice, so keep a spare day. If a guide says conditions are not safe, accept the change of plan.
Respect marine life: do not touch or chase mantas or turtles, and keep your fins off the coral.
A simple 4-day plan
- Day 1: arrive on the afternoon boat, swim in the lagoon, dinner near the beach.
- Day 2: morning lagoon snorkel practice, afternoon sandbank picnic.
- Day 3: manta or reef snorkel trip in the morning, lazy afternoon.
- Day 4: a try dive or fishing trip, then sunset on the beach.
Book the trip you care about most for day 2 or 3, so it can move if the weather turns. The Ukulhas cost guide shows how these trips add to the budget.
Family, honeymoon and older traveller ideas
Families get the most from lagoon time and a sandbank picnic, which needs little swimming. Ask for children's life jackets on every boat.
Honeymooners often choose a private sunset cruise or a sandbank trip for two. Older travellers who prefer not to swim much enjoy fishing trips and sunset cruises.
When another island fits better
If you want a long list of water sports and excursions, Maafushi offers more. If you want space to cycle and explore on land, see what to do on Thoddoo.
Ukulhas is best when your ideal day is a swim, a good lunch and one boat trip.
