How to get to Thulusdhoo from Male airport

You have a flight from KUL and want to know how quickly and cheaply you can reach Thulusdhoo.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

The usual route is a shared speedboat from the airport, about 25 to 30 minutes and about USD 30 per person one way. River Speed reportedly runs four boats a day from outside arrivals, around 11:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 22:00, so morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals connect easily; the evening Batik Air arrival usually needs a later boat, a private transfer or a Hulhumale night. The public ferry from Male costs a few dollars and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, but does not run on Fridays.

Worth knowing

  • Surf is most consistent from about March to October, the wetter southwest monsoon months

  • Maldives Islamic Bank opened ATMs in December 2024 and Bank of Maldives covers every inhabited Kaafu island; still carry US dollars

Getting there from Male airport

  • public ferry: about 1.5 to 2.5 hoursAbout USD 3 per person one way, reported

Thulusdhoo is one of the quickest local islands to reach: about half an hour by speedboat from the airport jetty. Late boats are reported too, which makes it unusually friendly to evening arrivals.

This page sits under the Kaafu Atoll transfer guide. For what the island itself is like, read the Thulusdhoo island guide.

Which transfer options reach Thulusdhoo?

There are three practical routes. No operator publishes an official timetable we could verify, so these figures come from 2026 travel guides.

aMaldives quotes a wider USD 25 to 50 range for shared boats. Confirm the current fare when you book.

Shared speedboat: times and booking

Jonny Melon (April 2026) reports River Speed departures from Male at about 11:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 22:00, seven days a week. Return boats leave Thulusdhoo at about 07:30, 08:00, 14:30 and 20:30.

Other guides list slightly different times and fewer boats on Fridays. Schedules change with season, so confirm a few days before you fly.

You can book through your guesthouse, which is simplest, or online through booking sites such as 12Go. Paying on the spot is usually cash.

Public ferry: cheap, slow and not on Fridays

The public ferry leaves Male city once a day, reported at about 15:00, and returns from Thulusdhoo at about 07:30. It stops at Himmafushi and Huraa on the way.

Reported fares are about USD 3 per person. From the airport you first take the airport ferry to Male city, then go to the ferry terminal near the fish market.

There is no Friday service, and times change for holidays and weather. Read what to do when the public ferry does not run before relying on it.

Which option fits your KUL flight?

The table uses the reported speedboat times. Allow about an hour after landing for immigration, bags and finding the boat.

Flight from KULLands MLE aboutWorkable Thulusdhoo plan
AirAsia09:5011:00 speedboat, on the island before lunch
Malaysia Airlines11:2516:00 speedboat, or the 15:00 ferry if not Friday
Batik Air21:5522:00 boat is too tight; ask about a later boat, a private transfer, or stay in Hulhumale

Late boats are useful, but a Batik Air landing plus immigration rarely meets a 22:00 departure. Our guide to staying in Male or Hulhumale before a transfer covers the fallback.

Getting back for your flight home

Early speedboats at about 07:30 and 08:00 reach the airport well before the morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines departures to KUL. Confirm your boat the evening before.

If your flight leaves in the evening, the 14:30 boat gives a comfortable margin. The 07:30 public ferry suits only flexible travellers on non-Fridays.

Travelling with surfboards or big luggage

Speedboats load bags at the jetty, which is easier than the public ferry. Tell the operator how many boards you bring, and ask about any fee.

Airline sports equipment charges are separate. See flying from Malaysia with a surfboard or dive bag.

What to confirm before you fly

A short message to your guesthouse a few days before departure prevents most arrival-day problems.

  • The boat time for your date, and the name and phone number of the crew.
  • The exact meeting point at the airport.
  • Whether the fare is per person, one way or return, and whether cash or card.
  • Space for surfboards, strollers or dive bags.
  • The plan if your flight is delayed past the last boat.

Add the transfer to your budget with the trip cost calculator. For four nights the shared boat adds about USD 120 for a couple, return.

Speedboat or ferry: a simple rule

Take the speedboat if you are carrying boards, travelling with children or parents, arriving on a Friday or on a short trip. At about USD 30 each way, it is one of the cheapest speedboat routes from the airport.

Take the public ferry only if you are a flexible adult with light bags, arriving on a weekday in time for the afternoon sailing. Our guide to choosing between speedboat and public ferry covers the wider trade-offs.

Who this transfer suits

Thulusdhoo's short ride suits families with young children, older travellers and anyone on a 3-night trip. Budget travellers on a non-Friday can use the ferry and save most of the transfer cost.

If you want a quieter island with a slightly longer ride, compare how to get to Dhiffushi.

Questions travellers ask

Where do I find the Thulusdhoo speedboat at the airport?
Guides report River Speed boats leaving from outside the airport arrivals area, near the jetties. Your guesthouse will usually send a name and phone number for the boat crew. Ask for a meeting point in writing, and allow about an hour after landing for immigration and bags.
Can I bring a surfboard on the speedboat?
Usually yes, but space is limited and some operators charge for boards. Tell the guesthouse or boat how many boards you are bringing when you book. Airline sports equipment fees from KUL are separate, and we cover them on our surfboard baggage page.
Does the public ferry stop at other islands?
Yes. Reports say the ferry from Male stops at Himmafushi and Huraa before Thulusdhoo, which is why it takes longer. It is a useful option for island hopping, but less handy on arrival day with luggage.
What happens if the late boat is cancelled?
Speedboats can be cancelled in rough weather or when too few passengers are booked. If you land on the evening Batik Air flight, have a fallback, such as a confirmed Hulhumale room you can cancel, or a private boat quote from your guesthouse.
